Leaving the Nest

Every spring when the fear of frost has passed, we set all of our plants back in their spot on the front porch.  The only hanging plant that I have is an airplane plant.  In just a matter of days, we have a bird nest and eggs living in the first class section of the airplane, along with a very protective mommy bird.  Once the baby birds leave the nest, we clean it out and try different ways to keep the next from being built.  From the photo below, you can see that we haven’t come up with a solution.  If you have stopped birds from living in your plants, how do you evict them?

“The bird dares to break the shell, then the shell breaks open and the bird can fly openly.  This is the simplest principle of success.  You dream, you dare and you fly.”
~ Israelmore Ayivor

  1. I don't think it's possible to avoid the birds. They prefere to build there nest the same places as always. I think you have to enjoy that little wonder :-)

  3. We have a nest every year in the lilac tree out front. It doesn't bother us, so we leave them there. We don't like the ones that build nests under our deck, so as soon as we see the start of construction, Mom takes it down. Usually they manage to get one nest built, but we try to prevent it as it is a dirty mess! Pretty shot of those nice blue eggs.

  4. I love the photo! I don't have an answer for this, though Emma may have the right idea. For some reason birds always want to build their nests under our deck too, and it often doesn't go well for them....the dogs are outside playing all the time and the mama can't spend much time sitting on the nest. Last year they lost their first ones to the cold spring. I don't know why they keep coming back! There's plenty of trees outside the yard they could use.

  5. I just enjoy the nests until the birds fledge. I also try to provide other sheltered places nearby. Sometimes it works.

  6. I had a Mama Mourning Dove that built a next in our plant (and then the same planter) for THREE years in a row. I didn't evict her, nor stop her from doing it. i loved that she felt safe on our balcony to build her nest there. I did finally get rid of the planter that had no plant in it (after year 3) and she never came back, which makes me sad.

  10. I'm not a big bird fan so I can't even imagine having them build a nest in my yard. Thankfully we've never had this issue but maybe it's because our cats spend a good part of their day out there?

  11. What a lovely photo! I am pleased you added the spot colour as I have never seen any BLUE eggs before! I can't answer your question though, lovely. It's not something I have had to deal with before but good luck!

  12. I've not evicted any birds, we have some that nest in a bush in our garden and I have to watch over them, it's tiring! :)

    I hope you're having a fun day,

    Your pal Snoopy :)
