Seven On Seven

This is a very exciting week for us here on the bayou.  Bentley is turning seven years old on Wednesday.  This is our first birthday that we can share with all of our friends.  We are really excited for this year since he has the #7 on his fur!  Bentley is channeling his “inner~Oprah” by hosting a giveaway of his FAVORITE THINGS!

This is Baby Bentley on top of Big Boy Bentley at 7 years!

Thanksgiving Day Dinner ~ Courtesy of Merrick Pets #FFHT

Me: “Good grief!  If y’all see me go anywhere near the refrigerator, bite me and refuse to let me go.  I am so full.”
Bentley: “I thought about warning you when you took that second roll.  Then, there were all of those yummy pies.  I am so glad you snuck me a taste of pumpkin with whipped cream.”

Pierre: “I loved the pie, but our dinner has to rank up there with the best.  Wee doggies!  Merrick’s Thanksgiving Day Dinner was incredibly delicious.  I didn’t think Gramma was EVER going to get the can opened.  I’m afraid I made quite a Thanksgiving scene with my dancing and singing.  After my first bite, I knew things would never be the same. I was in love with the taste of canned canine cuisine!”

Paws to Give Thanks #ShareGratitude

Me: “It’s Thanksgiving in America and you know what that means.”
Bentley: “Yes, it means I get to smell turkey roasting, dressing baking, pumpkin pies browning, and we get to go belly-up to watch football.”
Pierre: “It means that I get to stand under your feet in the event something hits the floor.”
Me: “I have to agree that it does mean all of those things, but it also means that we need to take time to give thanks for all of our blessings.  I thought we could pause to give thanks for some of the many things we are thankful for this year.
Bentley: “Well, you and Dad are on the top of my list.  Here, we can handle this by ourselves.  Why don’t you go start the baked spaghetti and cheese?  We can give paws for thanks.”

Shhh, Don't Tell

Next Wednesday Bentley will celebrate his 7th birthday.  Since he has a #7 on his side, we decided to make this a very special celebration.  He is having a big party here and we hope all of you will drop by.  There will be cake, cookies, and beverages.  Bentley wanted to channel his “Inner-Oprah” and giveaway some of his FAVORITE THINGS!  I’m not one to go around name-dropping but…The Honest Kitchen, Jones Natural Chews, Damien’s Best Dog Toys, Pawz ‘N Clawz Jewelry, Delca’s think!dogTreats Alligator Biscuits, and Jerky, and Silver Paw Pet Tags are some of the things he LOVES.
Did I mention presents?  We have loads of presents!  It is hard to sneak gifts inside when you have a Basset Hound.  He can smell treats through a double bag behind a closed laundry room door.  This year I ordered him a Customized Dog Disc from PrideBites.  So far, he hasn’t caught a whiff of it.  It was simple to design and turned out great.  I was excited to show you.

Vario Flexi Leash ~ A Review

Bentley and Pierre enjoy our walks throughout the neighborhood.  We know where the other dogs live, where the barkers are, and where owners sometimes allow there dogs out without a leash.  (Yes, it is against the law.)  There are areas where we could allow them to have more leash to explore.  I was looking for a leash that I could trust to do that.  I have seen a variety of retractable leashes.  Some of them are pretty, others functional, a bunch are clunkers, and even more are just plain flimsy.  I needed a quality leash that I could trust to stop when I pressed the brake button.  Bentley has unbelievable pulling strength and it makes stopping him difficult.

There's No Place Like Home for the #Holidays

Do you have travel plans for the holidays?  If you are leaving town, is your dog going with you?  I never like to have to be away from Bentley for very long.  I miss him and worry about him.  It’s the old saying that nobody can take care of your “children” as well as you.  We thought about traveling for Thanksgiving.  I’m not ashamed to say that the thought of Bentley not being with me for the holiday was a deciding factor.  After all, I’ve been saving his Merrick Thanksgiving Dinner for this special day.

For the Love of Caru Stews

Bentley: “Hey Pierre!  Hurry; come quickly!  There’s a box on the kitchen table and unless my nose deceives me, it’s Caru Stews.  We both know that this snout knows.”
Pierre: *sniff~sniff  “OMD!  I can smell it too.  Where is Gramma?  You know that we aren’t allowed to handle the scissors and open boxes.  GRAMMA!!!  It’s an emergency!”
Me: “What is it…what’s wrong?  Why are your paws on the table?  Oh, I see that you two have found the box from Caru.”
Bentley: “YES!!  Caru means “To Love” and that is the perfect name for these delicious stews.  You know, because we totally love each and every flavor.”

HSNWLA on Tuesday's Tails

Miss Gitty
In 1977, I went to my local humane society and adopted my first pet on my own.  She was a tiny little tabby that came running up to me yowling when I got out of my car.  I scooped her up and we knew that it was a forever love.  I have written about Miss Gitty here a few times.  It is usually to explain why I no longer have a cat.  She was with me from the time I was 18 years old until I held her in my arms as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge 20+ years later.  We grew up together and she was the best.  I promised her that she was my one true forever kitty love.
Over the years, I have wondered if that little humane society in the middle of nowhere was still in existence.  It was sad to discover it had closed long ago.  I’ve worked with PetSavers since beginning Barking from the Bayou last December.  They are wonderful.

Hands-Free Gate by #RichellPet

There are two things common in almost every pet parent’s home.  They have sheets covering the couch and baby gates in the doorways.  When company comes over, we can hide the sheets.  Unfortunately, there are times when we have to keep our furry friends separate from us.
We have a baby gate that has been through all of our dogs and our babies.
I do not miss this gate!
The problem with it is that it’s ugly and you have to climb over it.  I have stepped over it for so long, it is second nature.  That isn’t the same for Granny or Auntie when they visit.  It isn’t very polite to ask them to hurdle a fence to go to their bedrooms or the bathroom.  What is the solution?
Enter Richell USA and their fantastic hands-free gate!  They are distributors of quality home and pet products designed by Richell Corporation in Japan.  All of their products have excellent craftsmanship and attention to detail.  This is the reason many of their product designs have earned the “Editor’s Choice Award” for four years in a row.  (2010 - 2014)

Leading By Example

Bentley and Pierre love learning and practicing new tricks.  They take turns leading by example.  Pierre is showing Bentley how to “turn around” and Bentley is helping Pierre to learn how to sit up like a gentleman.

Whenever I tell Bentley to turn around, he usually takes a minute to give it some deep thought before accomplishing the trick.  However, Pierre is in my peripheral vision spinning like a top!  I really believe they help each other learn.

"Don't worry Pierre, you'll get it. Just relax."

Do you dread the time it takes cleaning and vacuuming the car after a road trip or a fun day at the park with your dog?  If you have better things to with your time, 4Knines has got you covered with a very fashionable solution.  It is certainly making my life much easier!
Jim and Maggie are the dog-loving couple who founded 4Knines.  The pet parents of two gorgeous, but rough and tumble Dobermans knew if they could design a product that would stand up to Ares and Ana, they’d have a winning product.  That is exactly what they did and the result is a high-end seat cover that is both attractive and functional.  Their motto is “Nothing but the best for your best friend.”

BFTB Channel 7 NETWoof News ~ 11/10/14

Bentley: “Welcome to BFTB Channel 7 NETWoof News.  I’m Bentley and along with my co-anchor, Pierre, we bring you the news you and your pet need to know.  Our news this week runs the gamut, so let’s get right to our top story.  Tomorrow is Veteran’s Day in America.  We salute all of our veterans and their four-legged comrades.  Pierre?”
Pierre: “Thanks Bentley.  You know how much I love our military veterans.  Do you know who else loves them?  It’s an organization named K9s for Warriors.  They are dedicated to providing service canines to warriors that are suffering from PTSD and/or traumatic brain injury because of their time in the military.  Our veterans may return from war, but it is hard to leave the war behind.  I can’t imagine anything scarier than a war zone.”

Are Our Military Working Dogs Being Left Behind?

We salute and honor our Military Working Dogs!
Did you watch the Hallmark Channel’s Hero Dog Awards last week?  I love to watch the dog’s stories of heroism.  I told my husband that I would have trouble attending the live show, since I would be doing the “ugly cry.”  Each dog’s story is so impressive and tugs at any dog lover’s heart.
After the show, I was left with the impression that our U.S. military dogs were being abandoned.  I was outraged and it made me cry even harder.  Let me say that I am not sure that was the impression the America Humane Association intended.  I am a huge fan of the incredible work they do. I am only telling you what I took away from the broadcast.

BFTB NETWoof News for November 3, 2014

Bentley: “Welcome to this week’s BFTB Channel #7 NETWoof News.  I’m Bentley And along with my co-anchor Pierre, we sniff out the important canine/cat news you need to know.  Our top story tonight concerns the month of November.  It is National Adopt a Senior Dog Month.  That is an entire month to list the benefits of adopting an older dog.  We will be listing one reason each day for the rest of the month.  Pierre, you are considered an adult like me.”
Pierre: “I believe age is just a number.  At three, I still have the vigor and joy of a puppy.  It is one of the things that makes me so dang cute.  Ahem, what I am trying to get across is the age brackets for dogs are different for different breeds.  I think just as human lifespans have been extended, dog’s lifespans have increased over the past decade.  Humans consider us more like a member of the family.  The vet care we receive nowadays is cutting-edge.  As a medium-sized dog, you’ll be considered a senior on your Happy Birthday this December.”

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

It feels so good outside.  The weather has turned cool, which makes it much easier to extend our walks.  Of course, longer walks lead to longer naps!  I’m trying to explain to Bentley that the extra hour of sleep was only a one-night deal.  He says I should learn to let sleeping dogs lie!

When he naps beside me on our recliner couch, his head rests on the foot part.  It looks uncomfortable so I always give him a pillow to put under his head.  Some people might consider that spoiled; he assures me they would be wrong.

Daylight Savings ~ See Ya' Later

If you live in the U.S.A., the chances are that you will be “Falling Back” at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday as Daylight Savings Time ends.  That means it will probably start getting dark on your way home from work Monday.  Don’t worry; we will be “Springing Forward” in five short months.
“Do Not Disturb.  I’m supposed to get an extra hour of sleep!”
