What is a Blog Hop?

Have you ever listened to a group of professionals talk to their colleagues?  Every occupation uses terms or sayings that are specific to their particular job.  That is fine as long as they are talking to people that have an understanding of the lingo.  It occurred to me that I may have been guilty of doing this to some of my readers.  I know that many of my readers are fellow bloggers.  However, a lot of you are not and you come by to visit each day.  I appreciate you so much and never want you fall victim of “Blogger Talk.”
I’m sure that you have noticed I participate in something called a blog hop
"Did someone say hop?"
on most days.  If you aren’t in the blogging business, you may not have any idea exactly what a blog is or how it works.  New bloggers may also have questions about blog hops and the purpose they serve.  I hope this post clears up some of those questions.  If not, don’t hesitate to ask me in the comments.

What is a Blog Hop?  A blog hop is a group of different bloggers that “link up” using a special code that is found on the host’s blog.  Most blog hops will have a central theme.  All of the participating bloggers agree to adhere to the guidelines set by each hop’s host.  It may be a general topic such as Thoughtless Thursday or the Pet Parade.  These are the two blog hops that I co-host.  They are fun blogs on a variety of subjects.  Other blog hops are more specific like BlogPaws’ Wordless Wednesday and Snapshots of Life from The Lazy Pit Bull.  Both of these blog hops focus on photography and very few words.
How do you hop?  I will resist the urge to say, “Lift one foot…”  To visit the participating blogs, scroll to the end of the post that you are reading and you will see a group of icons or tiny photos.  You can click on the names under each icon and you will be magically whisked away to that blog.  From there, you can go the next blog that interests you by clicking under their icon.  In other words, you “hop” from one blog to the next.
Why should you hop?  If you are a blogger, it’s a great way to make friends, discover blogs, get ideas for design or posts, and help others find your blog.  If you are an avid blog reader, it is a terrific way to find new “must-read” blogs.  There are different blog hops each day and special holidays/cause/awareness hops held throughout the year.
Blog hops are not limited to pet bloggers.  You can find a blog hop for most blog genres.  Below is a list of blog hops that you will find us participating.

Sunday:
Black & White Sunday features black and white photography.  It is not limited to photos of pets.  Sugar the Golden Retriever and Dachshund Nola are the co-hosts.
Sunday Selfies is a fun hop that shows photos of different pets taking “selfies.”  The Cat on My Head is your host of this cute blog hop.
Monday:
Monday Mischief is a great way to start your workweek off with a chuckle.  You will read some hilarious mischief that seems to follow pet lovers.  Our BFTB NETWoof News participates in this hop each week.  My Brown Newfies, Alfie’s Blog, and Snoopy’s Dog Blog host.
Tuesday
Tasty Tuesday is perfect for those of you that enjoy preparing home-cooked meals or treats for your pets.  This blog hop features some of the most drool-worthy recipes on the internet.  You can also find pet food or treat reviews.  Helping Tuesday’s get tastier are the hosts Sugar the Golden Retriever and Kol’s Notes.
Tuesday’s Tails is one of the first blog hops that we participated in and one I believe is making a difference in the adoption of shelter pets.  Each week a group of bloggers feature dogs, cats, and other pets that are looking for their forever homes.  Social media proves to be a powerful instrument as these pet photos and stories are shared across the world.  Helping change the future of shelter animals are your hosts Dogs ‘n Pawz and Talking Dogs.
Wednesday
Wordless Wednesday is brought to you by BlogPaws.  You'll find some of the best photos of the week on Wednesdays.  The great thing about this hop is since it is wordless; you can enjoy more blogs and their photography.
Thursday
Thoughtless Thursday is a blog hop that I am proud to host with Ruckus the Eskie and Love is being owned by a Husky.  We don’t have any rules; we just want everyone to join us for a good time.  You will read a broad spectrum of topics hopping along with us.  Our motto is "Don't think, just link."
Thankful Thursday is a beautiful blog hop expressing the large and small things that make the participants thankful.  Pepi Smart Dog hosts it.
Thursday Barks and Bytes will share blogs with a variety of topics.  It is a popular hop and hosted by 2 Brown Dawgs and Heart Like a Dog.
Friday
The Pet Parade is a rapidly growing blog hop that will take you on a parade of different posts.  We celebrated our one-year anniversary last fall and we continue to gain new bloggers.  This hop is special, because you can also follow your favorite bloggers on their listed social media accounts.  Rascal and Rocco host and I co-host along with my friends Basil the Bionic Cat, Jan's Funny Farm, and Love is being owned by a Husky.
Fit Dog Friday will help you get in shape with your best friend.  SlimDoggy, To Dog with Love, and My GBGV Life are the fitness hosts.  You can discover health and exercise tips to help you live a healthy life.
Flashback Friday is hosted by Five Sibes and Love is being owned by a Husky.  The posts feature previous favorite posts or great flashback photos.
Saturday
Sepia Saturday is another fun photo hop.  You will enjoy fabulous sepia photography.  Ruckus the Eskie is your host each week.

If you are a blogger and are interested in joining a blog hop, BlogPaws' Carol Bryant created a video that will help you learn how to link your blog to the wide world of hopping! These instructions refer to joining Wordless Wednesday, but will apply to linking up with the majority of blog hops.

I hope this helps you to understand the who, what, when, and where of a blog hop.  We are not taking part in a hop today, but you can test your new blog hopping skills out at the Tuesday hops listed above.

  4. Seems like a silly thing for a post, but when we first started we had no clue what it was all about and linked up totally wrong posts with no links to the hop, just a mess until we caught on. Good list of the hops - thanks for mentioning FitDog Friday :)

  10. We weren't aware of your Thoughtless Thursday hop - love the motto! One of the reasons we don't participate in too many of them is because we want to be respectful of all the people participating (and the ones hosting!) and if we feel we're too time-constrained to visit, well...it just doesn't feel right or fair to participate. But we sure do what we can when we can! Again - love your Thoughtless Thursday!!!

  11. What a good idea for a post! I sure could have used this info when I first started out blogging. I don't even remember now how I figured any of it out. It's also good for non-bloggers who might not know what it's all about, and nice to have a list of the hops. I forget about some of them sometimes if I don't join them regularly.

  15. I have sometimes wondered if blog hops confuse new readers of my blog as well. Like "What is all this stuff at the bottom of the post???!?" If anyone ever asks I will direct them here!

Thanks for the rundown of the daily pet blog hops as well. There were a few that I hadn't heard of yet!

  17. Excellent post and thanks so much for including me in your list. I had to cut back on my hopping. I think they are really great, but my time has been so limited and I just cannot get around to visit other hoppers as I would like. If I had more time, it would be another story. :)
