Remember Me Thursday

Today we are once again joining the Remember Me Thursday® global awareness campaign with animal lovers and organizations around the world to light a candle in remembrance of the millions of orphan pets who lost their lives without the benefit of a loving home.  It is also shining a light on the millions of pets still waiting for their forever homes.

Pet-lovers and animal welfare organizations from all corners of the globe unite to light candles on the same day to bring awareness to all of the dogs and cats that never knew the love of a forever home. You can join in and light an actual candle or choose a virtual candle by visiting the Remember Me Thursday website.
It is difficult to grasp the fact that 3.4 million orphaned shelter pets lose their lives each year. Euthanized because there wasn’t room for them or they were deemed unadoptable. This is the third year for this day of remembrance. Last year 138 countries supported the movement with over 100,000 individuals holding candle-lighting ceremonies.
Mike Arms, the President and CEO of Helen Woodward Animal Center says, “Millions of beautiful, adoptable pet will lose their lives in 2015. We all come from different countries, cultures, backgrounds, but together, we can raise our voices and share one life-saving message and literally save millions of pets on this one day.”
Remember Me Thursday is supported by such celebrities as Katherine Heigl, Alicia Silverstone, and even sports teams who take to social media spreading the “opt to adopt” message. Last year there were grass root programs and events in countries like Germany, Mexico, Canada, the U.K., Spain, Japan, and many more. That equated to over 4,500 candles lit at the Remember Me Thursday virtual candle gallery and thousands more lit at a host of ceremonies.
The 2015 Official Spokesperson is Carrie Ann Inaba from Dancing with the Stars. Her love for animals inspired Carrie Ann to found the charitable organization The Animal Project Foundation. Here is her message:

  1. So sad with all the homeless pets. Mom keeps saving kitties...don't really see the point, but she likes those felines, and she saved her first dog. One can only do so much.

  2. Great message. I do think more can be done to help rescues and available families meet so more of these animals do find homes. There is a balance to be reached that will provide more animals with forever homes and insuring these animals aren't returned.

  12. This is really beautiful. It is so sad that SO many dogs and cats end up in shelters day after day, year after year and far too many of them lose their lives because they don't or can't find a home in time. Not only must more adoption be encouraged but education to help PREVENT millions of pets ending up in shelters in the first place, every single day. Thanks for sharing this.
