Bayou Blizzard 2015

Let me begin by apologizing to my friends in the northeast who are being hammered by near record-breaking snowfall.  I know that our small amount of snow would not even be an annoyance to you.  I’ve seen the pictures and videos of your Winterfest 2015!  You have my respect and sympathy.
When you are raised in the Bayou State, snow is not on your weather radar.  When snow is predicted; we try not to get our hopes up, because we know it will end in disappointment.  Snow goes north of us; across Arkansas.  The weather map will show blue clouds indicating snow is heading straight for us, then it dissipates or turns.  We watch the neighboring areas being blanketed with the white stuff.  The local news always shows those lucky kids racing down hills on makeshift sleds and having snowball fights.  Oh, how we yearn for just a little bit of it.

Discover BVH Premium Dog Shampoo & Conditioner

Today, Bentley and I are discussing his bath time.
Me: “Bentley, come on and hop into the bathtub.  It’s time to wash the snow and winter gunk off you.  It’ll be fun!”
Bentley: “It will be fun for me, because I love my bath.  You on the other hand, can expect to be drenched in Basset shake!”
Me: “I know that you think that’s bad, but your shakes aren’t that mighty.  Your ears sling some water, but the rest of you doesn’t shake too much.  Look, I have a new shampoo for you to try.  It’s BVH Pet Care’s Premium Dog Shampoo & Conditioner.  It says on the bottle that I can make you a foaming bath by adding some like bubble bath.  Wow!  Look at the bubbles!
Bentley: “Oh, I love bubbles!  This isn’t going to make me smell all girlie, is it?  I have my reputation to consider, ya know!  What’s in it?”
Me: “It has coconut oil, citrus fruit extracts, and botanical lecithins to deep clean your dirtiest dirt, but it doesn’t have that “at the beach” smell.  There is a natural gentle fragrance that I think you’ll enjoy.”
Bentley: *sniff, sniff  “I believe that I am catching a whiff of brown kelp.  You and Dad will be glad to know that it helps protect my hair follicles and increases volume while helping to prevent unnatural shedding.”
Me: “No offense, but the way that you shed IS unnatural.  Seriously, why aren’t
"I love getting my neck wrinkles washed."
you bald by now?”

Adopt a Dog during #Winterfest 2015

We interrupt our regularly scheduled Barking from the Bayou Tuesday post for this update from our Weather Lab, Paisley.

Paisley: “Hey y’all!  When I said that we might get some winter precipitation here on the bayou, I’ll admit that I was skeptical.  I’d heard that we just don’t get much of a winter here and since it is my first winter ever, I believed it.  Boy howdy, was I surprised when I went outdoors this morning and the ground was covered in tiny pieces of ice called sleet.  They have closed down schools, offices, and many of our roads.  The warning is that if you don’t have to leave your house, then stay inside where it is warm.

BFTB Channel 7 NETWoof News 2/23/2015

Bentley: “Hello friends and welcome to BFTB Channel 7 NETWoof News.  It’s International Dog Biscuit Day, so grab a treat (or have your human make them) and enjoy some good news to start your week.  I’m here with my co-anchor Pierre Westie and Paisley, our Weather Lab.  We have tracked down the latest news worth sniffing.  This is usually where I turn the top story over to Pierre.  However, the top story is about Miss P, the gorgeous Beagle that took the Best in Show award at Westminster.  I don’t have to tell you how proud it makes us Hound Dogs to be recognized as Top Dog!  There were some fabulous dogs showing this year.  BFTB salutes them all.  Pierre, I noticed you were quite excited.”
Pierre: “I love the pomp and circumstance of the Westminster.  Did you see the swimsuit and talent portion?  They must have done it when I was outside on a break.  Miss P. probably wowed in a sleek one piece.  If a Terrier couldn’t win, then I’m glad it was a Hound.  You believe me, don’t you?”
Bentley: “Of course, you are a trustworthy newshound.  This brings me to our next story.  It appears that the humans are doing more studies about dogs.  We have pointed out on numerous occasions that scientists and researchers could say a lot of time and money if they simply asked pet parents questions.  A recent study shows that dogs can tell if a human is trustworthy.”
Pierre: “Seriously?  Of course, we can tell if a human is worth our trust.  Surely, they've heard the saying ‘If your dog doesn’t trust somebody, then you probably shouldn’t either.’  Don’t researchers have Pinterest?”
Bentley: You’d think they would.  Dogs are sensitive with big hearts.  Speaking of hearts, our next story is about the hearts of a woman and her dog.  A 41-year-old pet lover shares a special bond with her 5-year-old Cairn Terrier.  They both have a medical condition heart block.  Now, they share the same type of pacemaker.  The two pacemakers are nearly identical.  They even go to the same doctor for checkups although the pup, Molly, goes after hours.  I’d say they have found a doctor that’s a good sport.  That seems like a perfect segue to pitch it to Pierre.”

Pierre: “You’re right, let’s dive right into sports for this week.  Our good friend Cello and Hooch are making waves in the 2015 Dock Diving competitions.  They recently attended the Virginia World of Pets Expo in Hampton and made a big splash!  Cello’s longest Big Air jump was 21’11” and she made Elite Finals where she placed third.  Her Extreme Vertical of 5’4” brought her third in the Cadet Division.  She had personal best in the speed recovery with an astounding 8.788 seconds.  She took first in the Iron Dog Warrior Division.  You can see her in action here:

Bentley: “That is remarkable.  I saw where our little Hooch has grown up to become quite little dock diver himself.  The youngest German Shorthaired Pointer of the family placed in every Big Air wave he competed in and earned a first place ribbon.  It was only his second event and he made Novice Finals where he placed second.  Hooch’s best jump was 8’10” and you can see it below in slo-mo.  On a side note, Team Cello also won the event’s Valentine Box Decoration Contest.  I guess when you’re on a winning streak…”

Paisley: “Isn’t Hooch the dreamiest?  Sigh.”
Pierre: “It’s our Weather Lab Paisley!  Girlfriend, what is going on with this weather?  We have gone from temps nearing 70˚ on Saturday to having our local schools cancelled today for a winter weather advisory.”

Paisley: “Trying to predict this weather is like chasing my tail.  I can get close, but it is hard to get a firm bite on it.  We may be experiencing icing on our streets and you know that our humans are not used to driving on frozen roads.  It will be best that if it really does freeze over here, ya’ll just stay inside and cuddle.  Our weather is still mild compared to our neighbors to our west.  They will get heavy snow over the Central Rockies and heavy rains will make for a mess in Southern California.  Temperatures will be 25 to 40˚ below average in parts of the central plains.  That is face hurting cold, my friends.  I don’t want those of you in the northeast to be super stoked, but y’all will warm up for a day or two before you freeze all over again.  I’m sorry, but it is winter.  On a happy note, there are only 25 days until the first day of spring!  That’s it from me, Paisley the Weather Lab.  Back to you Bentley.”
Bentley: “Thanks for joining us as we dig up the good stuff each week.  From all of us at BFTB NETWoof News, have a spectacular week, stay safe, stay warm, and be sure to grab yourself some happy.”

Guess What We're Celebrating Today

Bentley: “Hey Pierre!  Guess what we are celebrating today.
Pierre: “Is it my happy birthday?  Do we get cake?”
Bentley: “No, it’s not your birthday.  Today is George Washington’s birthday.”
Pierre: “Ummm, is there cherry pie?  I’m good with some cherry pie ala mode.  Woo Hoo!  I love pie.”
Bentley: “There is no pie.  I was just pointing out that while it is not your birthday, it is our first president’s 283rd birthday.”
Pierre: “Holy cow!  Surely, that is in dog years.  He must be even older than Gramma!”

Dinos and Dog Dental Health

Bentley: “Hello y’all!  I wanted to touch on two subjects that are near and dear to my heart.  February has been designated as Pet Dental Health Month AND Spoil Your Pet Month.  Leave it to my friend Chewy to combine the two celebrations into one fun-tastic package.  They decided to spoil me with a dental chew toy!  Your eyes are not playing tricks on you.  It is a Nylabone®
DuraChew Dental Dino Dog Toy.  I’m sure that you dogs have had a Nylabone or two in your life.  They’ve been in business since 1955, so your humans must know how great they are for us.

The Benefits of Benecoat

Winter can be hard on your dog’s hair, skin, and coat.  The cold dry weather may lead to itching and a dull coat.  Fortunately, there is help.  Benecoat™ Professional Hair & Skin Frmula is fish oil for dogs.  By providing the correct amount of essential fatty acids, it can prevent irritating problems.  There is also Krill Oil, Hydrolized Collagen, and Linoleic acid from Safflower Oil.  These nutrients combined help keep your dog’s coat as healthy as a puppy’s.
Remember, your dog’s skin is their first defense against parasites and infections.  Benecoat provides protection against nature’s elements by providing two nutrients that your dog can’t make on its own.  Omega-6 and Omega-3 Fatty Acids are vital for your dog’s oil glands and maintaining overall health and immune response.

Does This Pillow Make Me Look Spoiled?

It is National Spoil Your Pet Month, although to be honest it’s pretty much a yearlong celebration here on the bayou.

“If having a frilly pillow to rest my head on is considered spoiled, then I am guilty as charged.”

B & W Outtakes

I always enjoy seeing people’s “outtakes” from a photo shoot with their dogs.  It tickles me when I see dogs that are usually being so obedient, acting goofy.  We were taking pictures for our Snapshots of Life “Love” post the other day and I thought I’d share two of our outtakes.

Valentine's Day Heart~2~Heart Dance & Samba

The big day is finally here!  Bentley and Pierre have dates with the My GBGV Life girls, Emma and Bailie.  Where are they going?  The Heart ~ 2 ~ Heart Valentine’s Day Dance at the Blogville Regency.  Mayors Murphy and Stanley are hosting this romantic gala and all of Blogville is expected to attend.  I’m going to turn this post over to the boys.  *Warning: They are known to exaggerate/embellish some aspects of their stories.  For entertainment purposes only.
Bentley: “Hey Pierre!  Stop primping and let’s hit the road.  We have to stop by and pick up Paisley before we get the girls.  I’m sure my human brother will have a ton of rules for me.  Especially, when he sees me pull up in my new sweet ride.”
Pierre: “Are you telling me that you haven’t told him about the new car?  He is going to freak!  You may as well be picking up his baby girl on a motorcycle!  Bahaha!”
Bentley: “Look, I told him that I was seeing a guy about a Vette.  It’s not my fault if he assumed I was talking about my doctor.  Besides, I am a safe driver.  Now, hang on because this baby can smoke!

They had to pose for the mandatory "parent" pictures.

BlogPaws Conference 2015 ~ Pet & Partner Friendly

Congratulations, you’ve decided to attend the BlogPaws conference this May in Nashville!  You’ve made the decision about whether you’re bringing your dog or cat, but what about bringing your husband?  Is your spouse, best friend, or partner still trying to decide if they want to join you at this year’s BlogPaws conference?  I completely understand.
I made the decision to attend the BlogPaws 2014 conference in Las Vegas, because I want to take my blog to the next level.  In order to become a serious pet blogger, there is so much to learn.  All of the people that I had met online in the BlogPaws community were so helpful.  I knew attending the conference and speaking to these bloggers face-to-face would be invaluable.  The line-up of speakers and classes were amazing!  I really wanted my husband, Skipper to join me.  After all, it was Vegas and the hotel was incredible!

BFTB Channel 7 NETWoof News February 10, 2015

Bentley: “Thank you for joining on this special Tuesday edition of BFTB NETWoof News.  We are happy to report another week of the news we nose.  I am here with my co-host Pierre and our weather girl, Paisley.  You can trust our reports, because we are dogs.  Isn’t that right Pierre?”
Pierre: “Yes, we are dogs.  *snicker  However, according to the new floor rugs ordered by Pinellas County Sheriff, they agree.  When the officers unrolled their beautiful new rugs, there was something unusual about the seal.  Instead of the motto found in U.S. government offices and on the currency; “In God we trust” the phrase read; “In Dog we trust.”  None of the department K9s could be reached for comment.”

“Two roads diverged in a wood and I ~ I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” – Robert Frost

When those words were written, little did Mr. Frost know the impact they would make on people.  One particular family that embraces this philosophy is the Petersen’s from Greeley, Colorado.  Their family has been in the dog food business for years in one capacity or another.  When they decided there was not a food they were satisfied in feeding their dogs, they set out to make their own.  In doing so, they took the road less traveled and it has made all of the difference.  They have a story, not a strategy. Their Wild Calling!® dog and cat foods combine “the science” of dog food with the beauty of nature and a genuine love for pets.  It is an artistic idea that they call The Art of Nutrition.

Authority Dental Sticks #DogDentalHealth

This post is sponsored by PetSmart, and the BlogPaws Professional Pet Blogger Network.  I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Dental Health Month, but Barking from the Bayou only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers.  PetSmart is not responsible for the content of this article.

February is National Pet Dental Health Month.  It is important to include a good oral hygiene program in your dog’s day.  This should include brushing their teeth and providing dental treats.  It’s not all about fresh breath, but it would be nice to have “dog-breath” become a positive phrase.
How important is great dental care to your best friend?

The Dog Clothes Dilemma

There are two sides on dressing your dog in clothes.  You either love it or hate it.  Most people have an opinion and aren’t afraid to voice it.  I think if your dog doesn’t mind or enjoys it, more power to you.  If your dog thinks it’s stupid, you should respect that and not put them in incredibly cute pajamas.
I have a dog clothes dilemma.  Let me explain.
The pet clothing industry is a booming business and it is gaining in popularity every year.  You can find incredible doggie duds from some famous designers.  I love looking at dog clothes and I really want to buy some.  Why don’t I?  If you thought the sizes were wonky for women’s fashions, you should try to follow the sizes in canine couture.

Microchipping Your Pet

We finally did it.  Last Friday we took Bentley to see our AAHA accredited vet to be microchipped.  It is something that I have given a lot of thought to over the past few years.  I had what I considered legitimate excuses.  The thing is; that’s exactly what they were…excuses.  To be honest, they weren’t even great excuses.  Now, Bentley walks around with a chip between his shoulders!

Bentley is in chip-shape and I have the card to prove it.
A microchip is a tiny computer chip housed in a special glass that is compatible with living tissue.  Once your pet has been microchipped, there is no need to change or replace it.
Our vet, Dr. Mirts cleaned the skin where he would be inserting the chip.  He showed us the needle and explained everything as he proceeded.  The special syringe is large, about a 14 to 16 gauge.  The actual microchip is the diameter of a pencil lead and as long as a piece of rice.  It is inserted under the skin between the shoulders.

52 Snapshots of Life ~ #Winter

Here along the bayou, our winters are usually warm with little chance of snow.  Bentley has enjoyed one snowfall in his life way back in February of 2010.  He had a blast catching snowballs and playing chase.  Just so you know, the entire city closed down for two days during this 1" ~ 2" Bayou Blizzard!
