BFTB NETWoof Dog News March 21, 2016

Bentley: “Welcome to this week’s BFTB NETWoof Dog News.
We hope that you are enjoying the first week of spring. The team has fetched some great stories to hopefully, put a smile on your face today. My co-anchor Pierre Westie and our top-notch Weather Lab Paisley are joining me at the desk, so let’s get straight to our top story.”
BFTB NETWoof Dog News with Westie using a walker
Pierre: “It is always exciting when our friends make the news. Our top story is about one of our Westie pals. We love Whitley the Westie. She lives in Texas and is one of the best-dressed girls in Blogville. Whitley has been having ongoing trouble with her back legs. They don’t want to move and her mom was having to carry her everywhere. She has been to specialists and nobody really knows what the problem is and her mom doesn’t want to have her undergo surgery. Whitley is 13 years old and they can’t guarantee that surgery would work. Well, our sweet friend is now cruising around in her very on special wheels. That’s right; she has been fitted for a pink wheelie chair. It took a little practice but she is moving around great now. We are so happy for our friend. Keep on truckin’, Whitley!”
Bentley: “That makes me smile from one long floppy ear to the other. There was another Westie in the news last week. Geordie Girl was awarded Best in Show at the Crufts Dog Show in the U.K. The happy pup is only two years old and has claimed the highest honor at the international show. There were over 22,000 entrants so it is quite a big deal. The show was not without controversy, though. The German Shepherd that won Best in Breed had severe problems with its hind legs. Shepherds are supposed to have a natural slant but this was ridiculous. Mom used to show her German Shepherd and was very upset this dog was awarded while having such an obvious flaw. The Westie was lovely and we are proud that she won top dog.”

Pierre: “She is a cutie, but I think Whitley and I could have been contenders. Just sayin’.  Our next story is incredible and involves Luna, a German Shepherd-Husky mix. According to her owner, Nick Haworth, the pup was cruising along with him on his fishing boat when she suddenly disappeared. An unproductive search of the 45-foot boat meant only one thing; Luna had gone overboard. The 1½-year-old dog was lost in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego.  Her owner called the Naval Base Coronado which controls the nearby island of San Clemente. They even sent out search planes but didn’t spot her. After ten days, they had given up hope. If Luna had made the two-mile swim to the island, there was nothing for her to survive on since there are only cacti and some fox. Almost five weeks after she disappeared, a staff member that works on San Clemente Island spotted a dog on the side of the road. Since pets are banned from the island, the employee stopped and called the dog’s name. Sure enough, it was Luna! They believe she had survived on rodents and dead fish. Other than being a little thin, she was very healthy. Haworth was working out of town when he received the news. Until he can get back to town this week, Luna is staying with his best friend. The Navy gave her a new dog tag that has her name and the words; ‘Keep the faith.’
Bentley: “That is a real story of survival. Remember that movie, Snakes on a Plane? Well, there was a recent incident in Zimbabwe that was almost as bad. Not the plot or the acting but the snake part. A farmer had discovered a python in his chicken coop so he captured it and put it inside a grain sack. He tossed the snake into his truck and drove four miles to release it. Instead of slithering happily off into the wild, it returned to the truck and made its way to the engine bay. The farmer drove around hoping the noise would make it decide to leave. When that didn’t work, he stopped and with the help of some friends, removed the snake and quickly drove home. Hopefully, the python won’t be back.”
BFTB NETWoof Weather with forecast map

Paisley: “Now, that is the kind of thing that’ll give someone nightmares! I am not a fan of ginormous snakes. Let’s talk weather instead. Hopefully, this week’s forecast won’t be scary. Even though we welcomed spring yesterday, there are still areas where Old Man Winter doesn’t want to leave. Folks in Utah, Iowa, Colorado and Montana will see some snow this week. The wind will push rain in from the west coast during the first of the week. That rain system will travel across the country arriving on the east coast by Thursday. Some of that rain will turn into snow in the northeast midweek. I think March is coming in like a lion and going out the same way! Let’s just hope that aren’t too many April showers because the grounds are saturated around here. This is the type of week where this Weather Lab really looks forward to a steady forecast of sunshine. Back to you, Bentley.”
Bentley: “Great job, Paisley. On behalf of the entire BFTB NETWood News team, I’d like to thank you for joining us for today’s report. We have some fun things happening on the Bayou this week so don’t forget to join us. Have a terrific day and be sure to grab yourself some happy.”

  4. We love Whitley and are so happy her new wheels are helping her out. Mom couldn't read the snake story as snakes creep her out too much. She did tell me they had mice on the planes a few times when she first started flying. She felt bad for them because of their little ears and the air pressure, and then if they deplaned, they would be so lost!

  5. Don't get us started on the whole 'slant' of German shepherds and no they are not meant to have it at all - you go back in their history and see old photos and you will see the original dogs had strong straight backs - they were meant to herd and you can't herd with a back like they have now.

  6. I'm so glad that Luna survived.... pheew... I bet all guardian angels are exhausted now :o) I was glad for Geordie Girl, it's great a Terrier won the show :o) And Whitley is always BIS in my book :o) It is sad to see some breeds like the GSD's today, they once were healthy dogs... and now they are the reason for pity...

  7. Oh, Whitley getting her wheel chair is the best news I have heard in a long time!!! I am so happy for her. I did see the German Shepherd and there was definitely something wrong with that dog. I felt so bad for it and I cannot believe it was awarded Best in Breed. Great news report again, pals! Happy Monday!

  9. Another riveting news report Bentley, Pierre & Paisley!
Wow, Luna is quite the survivor! Inspirational! Love the tag inscription, 'Keep the Faith'. 3 bum swings! 3 more!

My huMom was driving one day & a snake was slithering behind the dashboard. She didn't see it until it moved across the mileage window ;) She's not frightened by snakes or spiders; she simply kept driving & hoped he/she would be safe until she returned back to our rural driveway ;)

It was sure pawsome outside this weekend but I just read we are getting some snow tomorrow, ggrrrwl.

  18. We didn't know Whitley had back leg problems...itches, yes, but not the legs. Glad she's on wheels and able to get around by herself. We don't like snakes of ANY size...not that we've ever seen them, but SHE told us we don't like them.

You'll have to look up in the internuts about the cat in New Zealand who steals men's underwear....might be a good story.
