BFTB NETWoof News set with three dogs
Bentley: “Hello and welcome to this week’s BFTB NETWoof News. We would like to take a moment at the top of this Memorial Day newscast to thank all of the brave men, women, and canines who sacrificed so much for our freedom. We will never forget their service. Pierre, what is our top story?”

Pierre: “It was a tough week for good news but we sniffed through all of the sad and cruel reports to retrieve something that will make our viewers smile. The top story could have easily fallen into the first category of sad news if it weren’t for a loving scratch behind the ear. Ollie, a 10-year-old Shetland Sheepdog was receiving his final goodbyes due to failing health and paralysis. He had become increasingly weak and was no longer able to eat or walk. The vets had run numerous tests and weren’t able to find any reason for his suffering. His forearm had been shaved and the time had come. That’s when the vet intern’s caring scratch behind Ollie’s ear to comfort him ended up saving his life. She discovered a tick embedded in his skin where she was scratching. The veterinarian removed the tick and within 10 hours, the dog was walking around. The family had been camping in southern and eastern Oregon where they think the dog picked up the pest even though he was wearing a flea and tick collar. Ollie ended up being shaved completely to make sure there were no more ticks hiding in his thick fur. That makes me itch just thinking about it.”

Bentley: “I’m definitely not a fan of the tick. *shudder You might remember our February broadcast where we reported on a Macaw receiving a new 3D beak. It is always amazing to see the new ways this technology is helping animals. A team of veterinarians in Sao Paulo, Brazil dubbed, the Animal Avengers have assembled a new shell for Freddy, a tortoise that’s shell was 85% destroyed in a fire. Using photographs of other turtles, they designed a nearly smash-proof shell. It was printed in four parts and designed to snap into place. They integrated the pieces with his actual shell. A fresh paint job has Freddy looking like all of the other tortoises in nature. Three cheers for the Animal Avengers!”

Pierre: “Animal rescuers do such a terrific job and are often the unsung heroes in a tragedy. The wonderful volunteers during the fires in Canada saved countless animals. Recently, South Florida has been hit with flooding rains and it could have been detrimental to the Grasshopper Sparrows if not for a dedicated team of rescuers. The staff at the South Florida Ecological Services Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission have saved as many eggs and hatchlings as possible. That includes 3 chicks that were only one day old, a 9-day-old fledgling and around 30 eggs. Experts are hoping the nesting season will still be a success. The grasshopper sparrow can lay eggs more than once during a season.”

Bentley: “That is good news! Let’s take a look at sports for the week. Our buddy Gambler from Sand Spring Chesapeakes has passed his test to become a Master Hunter. He titled at the Manitowoc County Kennel Club AKC Master Hunter Test last week. This is the same funny guy that loves to get into mischief. It seems that he can be quite the skilled Chesapeake when it counts. Gambler is now the proud owner of the following titles: USJ- United Senior Jumper, HR- Hunting Retriever, U-CH- Conformation, MH- Master Hunter, CGCA- Canine Good Citizen, THDN- Therapy Dog Novice. That is very impressive, Gambler. We are really proud of you and your humans.”
BFTB NETWoof Weather with U.S. forecast on the back screen
Paisley: “Gambler is as dreamy as he is talented. *sigh The weather is going to be a nightmare for some of our friends along the east coast. Tropical Depression Bonnie made landfall in South Carolina and is going to be soaking a large portion of the U.S. this week. We will have rain and scattered storms almost everywhere except the west coast. California will be sunny and hot but won’t reach the triple digits like they are going to see in Nevada and Arizona. The northwest corner including the Seattle area will be nice. If you are in any of the storm areas, please pay attention to warnings and never drive through flooded roads. Turn around; don’t drown. Back to you, Bentley.”
Bentley: “That does it for this week’s news, sports and weather. Thanks for stopping by to fetch some good news and be sure to tell your friends and co-workers that could use a smile. Have a safe holiday and join us each day this week for more fun and adventures. We will be sharing some information that vets won’t tell you, introducing you to an awesome new treat from Dr. Harvey’s, and giving you great tips for taking a road trip with your pup. BFTB News will be back next Monday so until then, be sure to grab yourself some happy.”

  7. Thanks for digging up some great stories, guys! Ugh, ticks give us the willies, and thank goodness they found that especially nasty one on Ollie. It makes us want to be extra diligent in checking our dogs for them too.
We have a beautiful weekend weather-wise, so we're OK with some rain coming this week, we need it. Lucky for us the storms usually calm down by the time they make it this far north.
