BFTB NETWoof News July 23, 2018

Bentley Basset Hound: “Hello and welcome to BFTB NETWoof News for the week of July 23, 2018. We have some great stories to report and we always try to put a smile on your face. Our top story is a not funny, but it is something you need to know about so let’s get right to it. Pierre?”

Pierre Westie: “That’s right, Bentley. This is a warning to all the dogs that love spending time at the beach. A six-year-old Lab died after a fun-filled day playing at a popular dog beach in Florida. It began with a little diarrhea that evening. He was lethargic the next day but still eating and drinking. It was the third day that things became serious.
The dog was rushed to the vet because he wasn’t eating and wouldn’t respond to his owner. The vet told him his dog had high levels of sodium which caused the brain to swell. Next came a seizure and several convulsions. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for this sweet Lab.
The diagnosis was salt water poisoning. While they were splashing and playing in the water, the dog had ingested too much saltwater. The two had been to the beach many times without a problem. They always brought fresh water and the dog was drinking it. There is no way to keep your dog from getting a taste of salt water but make sure they swallow as little as possible.”

Bentley: “I’m thinking snorkeling probably wouldn’t be a good idea. Sigh…Maybe I will investigate a new craze in California. Cat yoga! Don’t worry, the cats aren’t doing the yoga (although they could). The adorable felines are up for adoption and do their best to purr-suade the yoga participants to take them home. We are happy to say that it is working, and the cats are finding forever homes. Maybe yoga is good for your heart in more ways than one!”

Pierre: “This is for anyone traveling or living in the Rehoboth, Delaware area. There is a new place in town that is my idea of heaven. It is the ice cream parlor and bakery for dogs called the Salty Paws. I don’t know about you but it is now on my bucket list. We love ice cream and are really licking it up in this heat. Maybe they will open a Salty Paws in Texas so we can review it! Now, that is the kind of scoop I'd love to report.”

Bentley: “We always enjoy when dogs get recognized for doing good. A hero rescue dog in Mexico has been honored with a statue. Frida is credited with saving at least a dozen lives during last year’s 7.1 point earthquake in Mexico City. She has been deployed to several natural disasters and has saved 52 lives. Her statue is next to one of her handler and we are so proud of Frida.
Hey, do you think they will ever erect a statue to us? We would totally rock being made of stone. Heeheehee.”

Pierre: “Yeah, I don’t think we need to start posing any time soon.
We do want to congratulate our lucky winner of the PrideBites Car Seat Giveaway. Rochelle E. is very excited and will donate her prize to one of her favorite rescues to help keep their seats clean during transports. Isn’t that incredibly thoughtful? We appreciate everyone entering and watch for a new contest with prizes for BOTH cats and dogs!
Paisley, how is the weather forecast?”
BFTB NETWoof Weather with Paisley the Weather Lab
Paisley the Weather Lab: “Whew! Can you believe the heatwave we are having? It is so hot that we are giving the squirrels a free pass this week. A good chase in this heat could cause health problems for dogs and squirrels!
Let’s start here in the south where we are looking at muggy triple digits. This heatwave will continue through the southwest and the west coast where they will have blistering temps. I can’t stress the importance of staying hydrated and protecting your pets from the dangerous heat. Do NOT under any circumstances leave your dog alone in the car.
Up in the Pacific Northwest you can look forward to lots of sunshine and warm days this week. The Plains will be breezy with storms moving through the center of our country. The northern states will see clouds accompanied by more storms.
The entire East coast needs to be braced for bad weather. It will be wet from the Great Lakes all the way down to the coast of Florida. Be careful on the roads. Turn around, don't drown!
We hope that you have a wonderful week no matter what the weather. Always check with your local weather stations for any warnings or updates.”

  1. We find the salt water thing curious, and had heard about it online somewhere. Katie used to drink it all the time from a puppy on and never had a problem. Strange. Hope you boys stay cool. We are thrilled to have cooler weather finally! Have a great week!

  3. What a sad story about the Lab. I've heard of salt water making dogs sick before, but didn't realize it could be fatal.
We think - hope - that Salty Paws could be so successful it would become nationwide! :)

  6. Oh, we have family that lives in Rehoboth Beach. We are going to have to find a way to get there so we can try some of what Salty Paws has to offer. Poor lab - so sad that his story had such a terrible ending.

  12. Yikes, that's terrifying and oh-so sad about the Lab at the beach. I can understand why Sam won't go near the water even more. Kudos to Rochelle for donating her prize. That's just pawsome!

  13. Now I'm sad on two accounts; I read about that poor Lab and the salt water poisoning, and it broke my heart. Not winning your car seat contest broke my heart too! We may need to break down a buy one, LOL! I'm glad you had a good hero dog story to lift my spirits though.
