Bentley: “Welcome to this week’s BFTB NETWoof News. You can count on us to bring you all of the news that we've dug up or tracked down over the past week. As always, I am joined at the news desk by my co-anchor Pierre and our adorable Weather Lab Paisley. What’s our top story today, Pierre?”
Pierre: “The top story this
week concerns a dog’s sense of smell. Not
to brag, but dogs have 10 times the number of small receptors as humans. This means that we can smell something that people don’t even notice when it's held right under their noses.
Frankie, a German Shepherd has been trained to sniff out thyroid cancer
in patients that have not even been diagnosed.
Okay, don’t gross out about how he performs the test.
He smells patient’s urine and if his nose detects thyroid cancer, he
lies down on the floor. If the sample is
clean, he turns away. In clinical
testing, Frankie was correct 30 out of 34 times. That’s a pretty good average.”
Bentley: “So, the next time
that your dog wants to smell around the toilet, it could be for your own
good. Speaking of cancer, researchers
have identified the biological mechanism that could give some cancer cells the
ability to form tumors in dogs. The
study found a correlation between the increased expression of a specific gene
in tumor cells and more aggressive behavior in a certain canine bone cancer. They think it may have implications for
cancer in humans. We are keeping our
paws crossed for an eventual cure and prevention of this dreaded disease.”
Pierre: "As the official
newscast of Blogville, we like to keep our citizens abreast of local
happenings. The trial of Samson the
Mouth ended with him turning stool pigeon on the stand. It is considered by many Blogvillians to be
the newest ‘Trial of the Century.’ You
can read the entire trial including links to the interrogation, the trial
transcripts, and verdict at the Police Commish Sarge's place. We are able to report
that Samson’s proverbial goose is cooked!”
Bentley: “Also on the
Blogville scene, it seems that something is afoot with our honorable Mayor Stanley and a certain beautiful Dachshund named Taffy. Rumors are flying around the streets and
grooming parlors, but as of this report, nobody has been able to verify if
anything unethical is occurring. We do have
the full cooperation for Co-Mayor Murphy.
We will keep our noses to the ground and our ears open for an update.”
Paisley: “Hey y’all! Can it be time for me? I really want to tell everybody something
important.”
Pierre: “Oh dear! It’s not a severe weather report is it? We will always interrupt our broadcast for an
update from our Weather Lab.”
Bentley: “Aww, it’s okay. It looks like things are happening with our Weather
Lab. Let’s go straight to our ace meteorodoglist
Paisley.”
Paisley: “Thanks guys. Guess
what! I started school last week and my
dad said that I was a good girl. I even
get to go back this week and they let me play and learn. It is really awesome!”
Pierre: “Congratulations! Are you working on your PhD?”
Paisley: “Yes sir. I will learn my Puppy Heel/Down, how to sit and be friends. It is Puppy Kindergarten and I’m going to
rock it! I don’t think any of the other
pups have a weather gig! Speaking of
which, it is finally going to be pretty outside! Most of the country will have sunshine and temperatures
reaching highs of the 60’s in the west and the 50’s in the east. Y’all be careful of the melting snow. There could be some rain along the south and
Florida will be baking in the 80s. That’ll
do it from the Weather lab.”
Bentley: Thanks for a
sunshiny outlook Paisley. Good luck with
your puppy kindergarten. I know that you’ll
make the news team proud. We’d like to
thank everyone for dropping by to get your news from us. Have a terrific week and be sure to grab
yourself some happy.”
