Bentley: “This is BFTB NETWoof News for the first week of May 2016. I’m Bentley Basset, your hound with a nose on the ground. Joining me at the anchor desk are my co-anchor, Pierre Westie, and the best little Weather Lab on the bayou, Paisley. For our top story, let me turn it over to Pierre.”

Pierre: “As we come on the air, a German Shepherd is being hailed a hero after leading firemen through thick smoke to his family’s two and four-year-old children that were trapped in a raging home fire. The parents and both children are hospitalized with conditions ranging from stable to critical. Maxx, the dog is being treated for smoke inhalation at his veterinarian’s office. We are sending our best wishes to all of them.”

Bentley: “It’s a great week for hero pooches. An adopted dog named Rex was walking with his human when they discovered a hummingbird on the ground covered with ants. The man thought the bird was dead, but Rex wouldn’t leave. Sure enough, it was still alive. They took the tiny bird home and gently nursed it back to health. It is now healthy and in love with his rescuer, Rex. The hummingbird known as Hummer; stays close by the dog at all times and takes dips in his water bowl!”

Pierre: “That is so cool. The hummers in our backyard never want to hang out with me. This next story puts a smile on my face and a wag in my tail. Ringling Bros. circus has officially retired its elephant act! The elephants have been part of their circus for many years. As humans learn the emotional toll it takes on the gentle giants to be chained and forced to perform, attitudes toward the circus act changed. The elephants will be sent to Ringling’s 200-acre Center for Elephant Conservation in Florida. Now, if they will reconsider the lions, tigers and camels they use in the performances, that’d be great.”

Bentley: “Speaking of lions, thirty-three were rescued from circuses in Colombia and Peru. They were airlifted to a wildlife sanctuary in South Africa. Animal Defenders International, the group that organized the project says it is the largest airlift of lions in history. Many of the big cats have been declawed and have broken teeth. They will be provided food and water at their new home since they cannot hunt for themselves. Hopefully, both the elephants and lions will be able to enjoy the rest of their lives. Paisley, are we going to enjoy this week’s weather?”
Paisley: “It will be an improvement over last week for most of the country. The west coast will be nice with a few clouds but the northwest corner will have some scattered showers. The northern states will finally feel some warmer temperatures with sunshine. Over in the northeast, there will be scattered rainfall and that rain will trickle down along the coastal states. They will also have cooler temps. Here in the south, we will be sweating in the humid upper 80’s along with a few showers early in the week. The center of the U.S. can expect some winds with warmer temperatures. By the way, my new baby is growing and could not be any cuter. I’m a terrific big sister too.”
Bentley: “Thanks for the weather forecast and the update on your baby sister. On behalf of the entire BFTB news crew, we want to wish everyone a very happy National Pet Week. Whether your best friend has feathers, fins, or fur we hope that you get to spend some quality time together. It is going to be a great week here on Barking from the Bayou so be sure that you drop back each day. We will see you here again next Monday for more good news. Until then, don’t forget to grab yourself some happy!”
