The
heat is on and we need to do everything in our power to protect our pets. I
know most people are aware of the dangers of leaving pets in the car and still
we hear about dogs dying from heatstroke. Leaving a window cracked is not good
enough. Dogs and cats are safer waiting at home while you go shopping or
running errands. This infographic shows just how hot a car can get during these
dog days of summer.
If your dog shows any signs of heat stroke, immediate action is required.
•Put dog in the bathtub and run a cool (not cold) shower over them. Make sure to soak the back of the head and their neck. Keep their head elevated so it doesn’t go underwater. If a tub is not practical, use your garden hose. • Apply a cold compress to the dog’s head. A bag of frozen veggies will work as a compress.
• Massage your dog’s legs to help circulation and reduce the chance of shock.
• Provide cool or cold water for them to drink. You can add a pinch of salt to help replace minerals lost through panting. • Take your dog to the veterinarian as soon as possible.
You can continue to walk your dogs during the summer. The best times to go is early in the morning or later in the evening when the sun is not bearing down. Always check the ground to make sure it is not too hot for your dog. The best way to test this is to place the back of your hand on the pavement for 11 seconds. If it burns your hand, it will burn your dog’s pads. It is a great idea to put PAWZ® on your pup’s paws to avoid any discomfort. Bring water for them if you are going to go any distance. We have a collapsible bowl that attaches to my leash so I can always pour them a drink when they get thirsty.

This is my first summer living where it really gets hot in the summer. Thanks for the tips on keeping dogs cool!
ReplyDeleteI am so happy we could give you some great ideas for beating the summer heat. Happy Pet Parade!
DeleteWe always take water on our walks and have switched to morning walks now.
ReplyDeleteIt is important for Westies to have water since we love to "talk" so much on our walks. BOL! Your Pal, Pierre
DeleteGreat advice.....now if we could just have a bit of summer over here, Mr Sunshine seems to be on his holidays *sigh*
ReplyDeleteLoves and licky kisses

It has been storming here for days and we are definitely over it!
DeleteWe are happy to have been having cooler weather so far this month. Heat is no fun! Stay safe out there!
ReplyDeleteFor summers on the bayou, this one has been pretty mild. No 105 degree days so far!
Deletewe have cool fall weather but nevertheless the cars turn into an oven when they are parked in direct sun... I wonder why people never learn this lesson, every summer we see pups in parked cars... and the whitewasher is: no problem, the window is open...uuuh... ;o(
ReplyDeleteIt never ceases to amaze us that people think their dogs are happier sitting in the hot car instead of their air conditioned homes.
DeleteGreat post, sad that so many still need reminders.
ReplyDeletePeople seem to be extremely slow learners in certain areas. LOL!
DeleteThis is such great information, thank you for sharing! I pinned all the InfoGraphics, they are wonderful. I can't believe that even at 80 degrees you have to exercise caution.

Thank you so much for sharing, Cathy! It can get hot in a parked car so quickly that it is scary.
DeleteWe are glad more and more states are allowing people to break windows to rescue pets in hot cars.
ReplyDeleteIf it is a matter of saving the dog or walking away, I will always choose to save the pup!
DeleteAt a dog show ghostwriter saw a sign that was posted at the entrance way. It said: if we see any dog left alone in a car we will smash the window to rescue it at the owner's expense.
ReplyDeleteFair warning!
DeleteDear Pierre and Bentley and MOm
ReplyDeleteMy mom says if she lives to be 87 million years old she will never in her wildest dreams understand how/why anyone thinks it is better to take a pet with them and leave them in a hot car. Folks have told her oh they have anxiety w/o me but DANG one can get over anxiety but not a heat stroke
Hugs madi your bFFF
AND DON'T EVEN GET HER STARTED ON PARENTS/GUARDIANS FORGETTING THEY HAVE CHILDREN IN THE CAR.
We agree 1000%, Madi! I can't imagine even leaving a child in a car no matter what the weather. There are too many crazies out there in the world.
DeleteAlthough we haven't seen much of summer temps; more like fall here huMom never leaves us in the vehicle & will do whatever is necessary if she saw a dog locked in a vehicle under distress!
ReplyDeleteIf you can bring someone with you so that the dogs can sit under a tree or have a short walkie that's pawsome. Otherwise Leave your good dogs at home not in a hot vehicle.
Thank you for sharing this very important message.

If we have the boys with us, one of us always stays in the car while the other runs into the store or wherever. I'd never leave them in the car alone for any reason.
DeleteGreat information ! The last infographic is the most interesting to us. Purrs
ReplyDeleteThe heat is definitely harder on some breeds but at one point it can be deadly to all of them. I'm glad that you enjoyed the infographics.
DeleteTick...tick...we do all of those things. At the moment we get to go in the car all the time, but soon it'll be too hot. We love those early morning walks...best part of the day.
ReplyDeleteWe have had a relatively mild summer compared to some we've experienced. The boys don't stay out in the backyard for very long at one time but Bentley loves to lay out in the sunshine and absorb Vitamin D.
DeleteAlso, if it's too hot - DO NOT take a street nap! At least not a long one....
ReplyDeleteLove and licks,

Great advice!
DeleteWhat great tips and infographics! Our weather hasn't been too hot here this year, but even when it's cooler, that sun is still hot! We do all of our walks in the morning still, and if Cricket can't play ball until later in the day (because of work), we are sure her pool has cool water in it and we only play for a few minutes.
ReplyDeleteJan, Wag 'n Woof Pets
The boys don't have a pool but enjoy getting some doggy ice cream to cool off after playing outside.
DeleteExcellent info...'specially during these dog days of summer.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much! We are trying to maintain our coolness through the dog days of summer.
DeleteGreat tips! Mom and I always walk early in the morning and no car rides for me if it's too hot.
ReplyDeleteWe try to get our exercise early in the morning or late evenings. We love riding in the car as long as the air conditioner is full speed on us! LOL!
DeleteExcellent post!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much!!
DeleteThis is such important information. Thanks for sharing it

That's what we are here for! Heat can be extra hard on your cute little faces but I know your Mom & Dad take super care of you.
DeleteExcellent and timely post.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! We are glad that you stopped by for a visit.
DeleteThat's a really important post. Hot days, cars and pets just do not mix!
ReplyDeleteThey sure don't mix well at all! Stay cool, my friends.
DeleteTerrific graphics to show peeps in simply terms because we need to keep it simple since it seems there are dogs that suffer in hot cars every day during the summer. Thanks for the reminder. Hope things cool down for you soon.
ReplyDeleteWe appreciate it. We are dealing with thunderstorms and high humidity right now! Whew, we are ready for fall.
DeleteGood information! Our mom is always careful about heat and our bodies.
ReplyDeleteYour Pals,
Murphy & Stanley
I know y'all carry lots of water on your 6-mile runs! You have pawsome pet parents too.
DeleteGreat info graphic,
ReplyDeleteThank you! I know you are very aware of the heat dangers being outdoors with your gang hunting and running.
