Bentley Basset Hound: “Hello and welcome to our first BFTB NETWoof News for February. This is the month of love and there is nothing we love more than sharing the good news with our readers. What’s our top story, Pierre?”
Pierre Westie: “We are excited to report that after more than 100 years without a single baby tortoise sighting on the Galapagos island of Pinzón, a group of tiny, shelled babies have been found.
The tortoise has been on the brink of extinction due to the result of sailors landing on the island in the mid-18th century. You see, they inadvertently allowed ship rats to invade the area. The rats quickly upset the fragile ecosystem by feasting on the tortoise eggs and hatchlings.
In the 1960s, there was only 100 tortoise remaining. Conservationists began an effort to save the species, but the rat population made it almost impossible. Then, in 2012, biologists used helicopters to distribute poison designed to attract only rats. The island has been declared rat-free and hopefully, we will see a population boom in the amazing Galapagos tortoise.
Bentley: “The one thing humans love is a good hero story. That is what Harvey the shelter dog was hoping for anyway. He has been waiting for his forever home for four long years at the Faithful Friends Animal Society.

Harvey was on a walk with one of the shelter workers when he insisted on pulling the walker over to a storm drain where he began barking. Closer inspection revealed there were three kittens stranded in the bottom of the drain. It took two weeks, but all three kittens were rescued. They are being fostered.
The problem is that poor Harvey is still waiting for someone to adopt him. Would you please share his information so we can get this hero a home?”
Pierre: “A running enthusiast from Bangkok, Thailand named Khemjira Klongsanun made news as she was recently sidetracked during a local marathon. She'd run about seven miles when she spotted a tiny puppy alone on the side of the road.

Knowing she couldn't just leave the little thing by herself, Khenjira stopped to scoop the pup up into her arms. Then, she got back into the race and completed the next nineteen miles with her new best friend securely in her arms. They did return to where the puppy was found to make sure there were no other puppies or a mom dog. It appears the pup was truly abandoned. Thanks for saving her life, Khenjira!”
Bentley: “Speaking of marathons, a 2 ½-year-old Bloodhound in Alabama accidentally joined the Elkmont Train Trek Half-Marathon. Ludivine was let out in her yard for a potty break when the runners must have caught her attention. She not only finished the race but came in 7th place! Her family was very surprised because she tends to be a bit of a lazy bone. The race is being renamed the Hound Dog Half in Ludivine’s honor. No word on whether she will run again next year but we have a feeling she’ll be there!

Paisley the Weather Lab: “I love to run so a marathon would be a lot of fun for me! Just catch me before our temps reach the triple digits.
I’m happy to report the Polar Vortex has left the USA! It will still be extremely cold in the northern states but nothing like the dangerously below 0° temps and wind chill you experienced last week. You should get some fresh snow to play in too! There is a chance for snow in most of the northern states over the next few days. Shout out to our family in Washington state! Expect heavy snow from Montana to Minnesota. Bundle up and make sure to protect your dog’s feet when they are outside.
The east is warming up with temperatures 20° above normal while further south there will be showers and some storms. The southern states are expecting mild days with rain later in the week. Rain is forecast for the center of the country with some areas getting a mix of rain and snow. California has more rain coming so we want to remind everyone about the dangers of possible mudslides.
Please stay tuned to your local station for updates or warnings. Stay safe and if you live in the colder areas, stay warm.”
Bentley: “That is all for today’s BFTB NETWoof News. Please join us all week for more feel-good stories, laughs, and a few pet parenting tips.
Have a wonderful day and be sure to grab yourself some happy.”
