The Plight of the Potcakes

Have you ever heard of a Potcake? They are a mixed breed of dog that is native to the Turks and Caicos Islands and the Bahamas. The name Potcake comes from a congealed rice and pea mixture that the locals feed their dogs. Most potcake dogs have smooth coats, cocked ears, and long faces. They are really cute, but they need help.

I recently learned about the Abaco Shelter in Abaco, Bahamas from Dr. Harvey’s President/CEO, Wendy Shankin-Cohen.  She shared with me how the women who volunteer at the shelter do so without things that we take for granted such as running water and electricity. Still, without this shelter many of the Potcakes would die of starvation and disease. It is located at the site of the old Abaco dump and serves as the island’s only shelter. They do their best to rescue, care for, house, and find homes for these pups. It is not easy, but they continue day and night trying to provide for them.

If you are a regular reader of ours, then you know that we are huge fans of Dr. Harvey’s. The family company is best known for their natural and organic products for animals. They are also very involved in supporting animal rescue and animal welfare.
The Dr. Harvey’s team is traveling to Abaco in an effort to bring help and attention to the plight of this lone facility of hope. Carrying much-needed supplies, they will visit the shelter later this month. While they are there, they will be filming a documentary to help the cause. Wendy will be traveling with Evelyn Vaccaro who will be filming the documentary. She has been helping the Potcakes for over 20 years.  Hopefully, these efforts will help bring attention to the Abaco Shelter and the plight of the Potcakes.
