5 Tips to a Safe Football Season with Your Dog

Here on the Bayou, we enjoy four seasons; winter, spring, summer, and football. People even tailgate at our high school games. We take our teams and winning seriously. This was made all too obvious earlier this week with the firing of our L.S.U. Tigers’ football coach, Les Miles. On a personal note, I think he is one of the nicest, most genuine coaches on the college sidelines. But nice doesn’t win games and winning is what brings the thousands of fans to Death Valley on Saturday nights. We are keeping our fingers crossed that a new coach can put the roar back in our favorite Tigers.

Enjoying a football game whether it is college or pro means delicious food. Bentley and Pierre know it’s game day when the food hits the table. That is when they try their darnedest to cause a finger food fumble. The problem is that football fare is not ideal for their doggy tummies.

5 Tips on National Good Neighbor Day for Pets

In celebration of National Good Neighbor Day, we are rerunning one of our most popular posts on being a good neighbor. Enjoy!
Bentley Basset in floppy hat with hidey ho neighbor meme
Are you a good pet neighbor? There are a few common courtesies that will keep you from being “that person with the dogs/cats.”
Do not let your pet roam free. Pets that are loose risk being injured/killed by a car or angry neighbor.
If your dog takes care of its business in the neighbor’s yard, you must pick it up. This is a major complaint in neighborhoods and apartment complexes.
Don’t allow your cat to use the neighbor’s garden as its litter box.
Even if your dog’s voice is music to your ears, the neighbors don’t share the joy. Do not allow incessant barking.
Never assume that other dog/cat walkers want their pet to mingle with yours. Don’t let your pet approach another animal without the owner’s permission.
We are all ambassadors for our four-legged friends. If they are frowned upon by the neighbors, it is ultimately our own fault. By following the “Big 5” your pet will be a welcomed addition to any neighborhood.
What is your pet peeve with neighbor’s animals? Leave a comment!

Halo Adds a Nutrition Boost to Mealtime

Halo mix 'n mores cage-free chicken
Barking from the Bayou, LLC received a bag of Halo mix 'n mores in exchange for an honest review. We only share products or services that we feel will benefit our readers and that we use ourselves. Halo is not responsible for the content of this article.
When it is time for Bentley and Pierre to eat, they act as if they are going to starve if I don’t feed them immediately. This means that I need to have the oil and protein ready to add into their pre-mix meal. I try to have chicken, beef, or turkey browned/boiled but there are times when I need something fast and easy. Enter Halo’s mix ‘n mores™.

Easy Walk Harness Makes It Easy To Walk Your Dog

PetSafe Easy Walk Harness in package
Barking from the Bayou, LLC received a PetSmart Easy Walk Harness in exchange for an honest review. We only share content we feel would benefit our readers and that we use ourselves. PetSafe is not responsible for the contents of this article.
Taking Bentley and Pierre for a walk is one of the highlights of our day. They enjoy getting out of the house and exploring while we enjoy spending quality time with our best friends. The problem is that Pierre tends to enjoy his walks a little too much. Bentley can’t wait to sniff everything that we pass on our journey so it is usually me pulling him but not Pierre. He is a spitfire on the end of a leash. This leads to a lot of pulling to get us to go where he wants to go as fast as possible. That is why I was so excited to talk with the PetSafe® representatives at this year’s BlogPaws™ conference. They had the EasyWalk® Harness on display so I asked a ton of questions.

Light a Candle and #RememberMeThursday

Framed photo of Miss GItty the tabby cat with her collar and candle

Today I am remembering my rescue cat, Miss Gitty. She was my best friend and confidant for 20+ years. I adopted her from our local humane society when I was 18 years old. She was a scrawny little kitten that came running up to me and clawed my jeans the minute I stepped out of my car. It was obvious that she had decided to rescue me. Even though I am publicly remembering her today, not a day goes by that she doesn’t enter my mind. That’s because it is a short trip from my heart to my head.

Me: “I knew that you boys would love these treats. They don’t have corn, artificial colors or preservatives in them but they are great for daily joint support.”

BFTB NETWoof News September 19, 2016

Bentley: “Hello and welcome to BFTB NETWoof News for the week of September 19, 2016. This is where we fetch the good news for you. Today’s reports center on some really important events that are taking place this week. We would love for you to share these with your friends or on your blogs. Pierre, what is up first?”

Pierre: Let’s start with today. It is Puppy Mill Awareness Day. Most of you have heard about puppy mills but they are still being operated all over the country. Dogs are used solely for breeding purposes. They are kept in wire cages, never get to see the vet, live in filthy cages, and when they can no longer have babies every six months, they are killed. I know, it gives me the chills too. Those cute puppies in the pet stores or at the flea markets are usually puppy mill pups. Please do your part by never buying a puppy from a backyard puppy mill breeder. The folks behind Puppy Mill Day do a fabulous job in rescuing and rehabilitating puppy mill dogs. You can also learn about this year’s 1-800-PetMeds 2016 Change A Pet’s Life winner Regina, an English Bulldog. Her story is one of hope and change that you will enjoy.”

5 Tips to Being Cool

Bentley Basset wearing sunglasses and a beret.
Bentley: “It’s Friday and I think that we have been serious most of the week.  In order to end your work week with a much-deserved smile, I thought I’d answer some of my e-mail.”
Pierre: “Are you telling me that you received mail from a dog seeking advice?”
Bentley: “What’s so strange about that?  I’m a Basset Hound; we are a very empathetic breed.”

One Westie and a Baby

Pierre the Westie is sound asleep cradled in my arms
Pierre is crazy in love with our five-month-old granddaughter. On days her mom and dad work she stays with us. He spends the day bringing her all of his toys. It's obvious that he already knows she is going to be a great playmate. Anytime I sit down on the couch with her, Pierre is right beside us. He has always enjoyed me holding him like a baby and scratching his belly although he doesn’t mind sharing his grandma with Emery. When she goes home, my arms are all his. He was sound asleep and snoring in this photo because babysitting is hard work for a Westie.

You can see whole pieces of meat and vegetables when you open the can. They call the process that started this new trend in the pet food industry, “People Food for Pets™”.

BFTB NETWoof News September 12, 2016

Bentley: “Welcome to this week’s BFTB NETWoof News. I am Bentley Basset and joining me at the anchor desk is my good friend Pierre Westie and our always reliable Weather Lab, Paisley. Together we have fetched the best in news, sports , and weather. What’s our top story, Pierre?”

Pierre: “As many of you know, our home state of Louisiana has experienced massive flooding this year. The most recent one devastated Baton Rouge and other southern cities and towns. Whenever a natural disaster happens, there are usually thousands of pets displaced. This flood was no exception but thanks to Wings of Rescue, some generous donations and various rescues, including Oregon Friends of Shelters, 100 dogs, and cats now have a chance at finding new homes. They were flown from kill shelters in Lafayette, La. to Oregon where they will be adopted from SW Washington to Southern Oregon shelters.”

7 Things Your Dog Wants You 2 Know

MIU PET Shower Turns Bath Time Into Spa Day

Barking from the Bayou, LLC received an MIU PET Multi-Functional Dog Shower in exchange for an honest review. We only share products or services that we believe would benefit our audience and that we use ourselves. All opinions are our own and MIU is not responsible for the contents of this article.
Bath time is part of living with a dog. Bentley and Pierre are usually in the tub every other week. I won’t say who but one gets a very distinctive “Hound Dog” smell and a certain white fluffy dogs loves to roll in the dirt. They think they smell terrific, but they are wrong. You might be lucky and get away with fewer dog baths than I do but still the day comes when you have to do it. What do you do? Is it a struggle with the water spraying everywhere and the shampoo bottle on its side with the liquid gold running down the drain? I have been there and done that! We used to live with two German Shepherds and they were like washing diesel trucks!

Discover An Oracle for Your Pet

Dr. Harvey's Grain-Free Oracle Dog Food

Me: “I love Dr. Harvey’s Oracle Freeze-Dried Foods for dogs and cats. It is not like any other food you have experienced. My friends at Dr. Harvey’s have created a complete food with carefully selected proteins, the finest quality ingredients and it is made here in the U.S.A. BFTB NETWoof New September 5, 2016

Bentley: Happy Labor Day and welcome to BFTB NETWoof News. If you have the day off, fetch another cup of coffee and enjoy some good news. My co-anchor, Pierre has our top story.”
BFTB NETWoof News Top Story of Romeo the Golden Retriever
Photo is actually our Tucker, the Golden Retriever
Pierre: “We love a great survivor story and they don’t come any better than Romeo’s. Many of you have heard about the devastating earthquake in Italy and the tragic loss of lives. One family whose home was damaged never gave up searching for Romeo, their Golden Retriever. After 9 long days of searching and calling his name, they heard barking beneath the rubble. Sure enough, they found him and after being pulled out, he took a moment to check his surroundings, began to wag his tail and greeted his humans. Needless to say, the family and rescuers were thrilled.”

It's a Labor Day Weekend Two'fer

We hope that everyone is planning a great Labor Day weekend here in the U.S.A. It is the last hurrah of summer and we can’t wait for the first crisp day of autumn. Of course, this weekend means two things to Bentley & Pierre…
Squirrel Season
Bentley Basset Hound building a squirrel stand on a tree with Pierre Westie trying it.
Our local squirrels are busy running up and down the trees this time of year and Pierre is busy “terrier~izing” them. They are certain this new Bayou Boys Super Duper Squirrel Stand is the answer to ridding the yard of those pesky varmints.

Treat Your Best Friend to Wellness

Barking from the Bayou, LLC was given the Wellness® treats featured below in exchange for an honest review. We only share products and services that we believe will benefit our audience. All opinions are our own and Wellness is not responsible for the contents of this article.
Wellness Well♥Bars and Core Marrow Roasts
Bentley: “We have some super exciting news to share with you! Our friends at Wellness® have a new line of delicious grain-free treats. They gave us some to try at a special breakfast during the BlogPaws conference. OMD! These babies are delicious.”
Pierre: “You aren’t just whistling Dixie, Bentley. The Wellness Core® Marrow Roasts will have any dog drooling. They are all-natural, packed with protein treats made with REAL marrow. They are crunchy but not a hard crunch.
Me: “The resealable bag keeps them fresh and makes it a snap to carry on a road trip. You can buy them at your favorite pet store in Basted Beef or Roasted Turkey. Of course, since they only cost $5.99 for an 8 oz. bag, you might as well pick up both.”
