Light a Candle and #RememberMeThursday

Framed photo of Miss GItty the tabby cat with her collar and candle

Today I am remembering my rescue cat, Miss Gitty. She was my best friend and confidant for 20+ years. I adopted her from our local humane society when I was 18 years old. She was a scrawny little kitten that came running up to me and clawed my jeans the minute I stepped out of my car. It was obvious that she had decided to rescue me. Even though I am publicly remembering her today, not a day goes by that she doesn’t enter my mind. That’s because it is a short trip from my heart to my head.
This is our third year to join the Helen Woodward Animal Center along with 164 countries to #RememberTheRescue. This event started four years ago to honor all of the animals that don’t make it out of shelters.

The reality is harsh and heartbreaking but the truth is that 3.4 million orphaned shelter pets will die while waiting to be adopted this year.* As hard as it is to look through the bars at their sweet little faces, imagine how unbearable it must be to look out of those bars.
That is why we are sharing Remember Me Thursday in an attempt to show our love and concern for all of the pets waiting for their special human. We are lighting a candle in their honor and ask that you do the same.

  3. We remember all four of our shelter cats we got in Germany, now we have two from the Humane Society here, and Mom had several others we never even knew. Adopting kitties from a shelter is something she will always do. So many need homes.

  4. I love seeing and hearing about the real Miss Gitty! She was such a great character in the books. We hope this day helps many more shelter pets find their homes; the numbers of those that don't make it are so sad.

  13. This post really hits home for me. I too am a rescue who spent months in a shelter waiting for my huMom to find me. In fact all my fursiblings are rescues who faced the possibility of euthanasia including GG & MiG the pot bellied pigs.

My huMom has been working with animals since she was a teenager & has always fought against puppy/kitten mills. She has seen first hand what shelter life means for animals as she worked in Toronto's Humane Society many years ago & later worked as a supervisor in a well known animal hospital. We believe that non human animals are not product or property & until the law states this we will continue to see animal abuse.

My huMom loves her shelter/rescues furbabies, living & those past. They live in her heart & in her memories.

Miss Gitty was pawfect. Love the photo. Too sweet. It is obvious Miss Gitty knew love.
