10 Fun Animal Facts for National Trivia Day

We are celebrating National Trivia Day with some fun facts about dogs, cats and other random animals. These could be helpful playing Jeopardy or be the answer to the million-dollar question! Bentley and Pierre will provide commentaries because they insisted.

• Dogs have about 1,700 taste buds.
Bentley: “Which explains why I love to eat so much.
• A single elephant tooth can weigh 9 pounds.
Pierre: Can you imagine how bad it would hurt if an elephant bit its tongue while eating? OUCH!

• Cats have 32 muscles that control their outer ear and can rotate its ears independently 180 degrees.
Pierre: “Wow! If my ears would rotate like that, I could hear squirrels trying to sneak up behind me.”

Bentley: “I thought tigers were purple & gold…oh wait, that’s the LSU Tigers!”
Basset Hound with "need for speed." quote
• A dog’s shoulder blades are unattached to the rest of their skeleton for greater flexibility when they run.
Bentley: “I still have a lot of get-up and go at 10 years old!”
• Sea otters hold hands when they are sleeping, eating or resting to prevent themselves from floating away. These groups are called rafts and can contain 2 or hundreds of sea otters!
Pierre: “Awww, that is so sweet. We should try holding paws when we sleep. There is no fear of us floating away but we would be absolutely adorable.”
Man,woman and two dogs at Grand Canyon
• A group of dogs is called a pack.
Bentley: “We do consider Mom and Dad part of our pack even though they are only human.”
• A group of cats is called a clowder.
Pierre: “Why do cats get a cool name and we get pack? We need to think of a better name for a bunch of dogs.”

• Dog nose prints are as unique as human finger prints and can be used to identify them.
Pierre: “We have to be more careful where we leave our nose art. Someone could use our nose prints to frame us.”
