The Good Ol' Summertime

Bentley Basset Hound: “Hey, Pierre! Guess what day it is?”
Pierre Westie: “Let’s see…it’s not my birthday. Is it Westie Appreciation Day? Most importantly, does it involve cake?”
*This post contains affiliate links
Bentley: “I don’t smell cake and there is no such thing a Westie Appreciation Day. At least I’m pretty sure there isn’t. Anyway, today is the first day of summer! We need to remind our friends about some of our favorite safety warnings.”
Pierre: “I love everything about summer except the bugs. I am not a fan of fleas, ticks, mosquitos, or the dreaded no-see-ems. Those little monsters bite us and then we start scratching, then we get a sore which could get infected. It can just become a big bug thing that is easily avoided.
Some dogs and cats use fleas/tick drops, others wear repellent collars, and some use all-natural sprays. Be sure that you are using something, so you are protected.”
Bentley: “Speaking of mosquitos and protection, we want to make sure if heartworms are a problem in your state, you need to get a heartworm test at the veterinarian. You can purchase a preventative at their office or have them write a prescription so you can buy them wherever you prefer.”
Pierre: “If you take your dog boating, be sure they wear a life vest. Even if they are an excellent swimmer, boating accidents can happen and dogs need to have their own floatation device. You might need to reassure them that their butts don't look big when they wear the vest. Some of us are sensitive.”
Bentley: “Don’t forget to bring some water and a bowl so they can have fresh water drink. They should be discouraged from drinking lake or pond water. You’ll also want to bring along puppy pads and poop bags. If your dog is shaved or short-haired, apply a pet-friendly sunscreen or put them in a tee shirt. Dogs get sunburned too.
Pierre: “Let’s discuss spending time in the sun. I cannot for the life of me understand how you can just lay out in the yard when it is 100°F. There are a few times that I glance over at you and could swear you had melted!”
Bentley: “Here’s the deal. You know how some dogs LOVE being out in the snow? It is the exact opposite of that. The sunshine is good for my soul and it feels so good.
The important thing with me is that I can always go inside where it is air-conditioned or I can choose to relax under the ceiling fan on the patio. Mom always makes sure we have plenty of fresh water both inside and out. No dog should be forced to stay outdoors without proper shelter from the sun. A backyard doggie pool is fun during the summer months and helps to keep your best friend super cool.”
Pierre: “We still want to go for our walks during the summer months. It is important that we don’t burn our paw pads on the hot concrete. You can go on walks in the mornings or late evenings when the sidewalks have had a chance to cool down.”
Bentley: “If you decide to walk during the day, check for excessive heat by holding the back of your hand on the street/pavement for 5 seconds. If you can’t do it, the ground is too hot for your pup’s unprotected pads.
We wear Pawz™ to keep our pads safe during summer walks. They are easy to put on and they didn’t make us walk goofy. Mom likes that you get several pairs in each container. She cuts a couple of small slits in the top of them to prevent us from sweating too much while we are wearing them. It amazes us how many dogs we see walking on the hot southern sidewalks without protecting their paws.”
Summer weather is wonderful for spending time outdoors exploring with your best friend. A little precaution can go a long way in making it a summer to remember.

Pierre Westie: “Thanks! We are used to reporting on dogs doing many remarkable things, so it seems fair that we would run across the occasional mishap. That is what happened in Iowa when a Pit Bull/Labrador mix named Balew was roughhousing with his person on the couch.

Can Hemp Infused Treatibles Help Your Pet?

Have you ever wondered if phytocannabinoids could benefit your pets? The World Health Organization (WHO) has determined that CBD has “been demonstrated as an effective treatment for epilepsy” in adults, children, and animals. They even found “preliminary evidence” that it could be used in treating Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, psychosis, and Parkinson’s disease. The report went on to state that naturally occurring CBD is safe and not associated with any negative public health effects. [PDF]

Treatibles® was the first company to infuse products with phytocannabinoids. The phytocannabinoid oil is extracted from medicinal grade hemp grown in the USA. The all-natural hemp contains more than 80 cannabinoids but less than .3% THC. What that means is your pet is not going to get “stoned” or “high” from ingesting Treatibles.

Bentley Basset Hound: “You know it is always a great day when Chewy stops by the Bayou. We were running pitifully low on treats, so our paws were crossed as Mom opened the box.”

World Pet Memorial Day Memories

World Pet Memorial Day is celebrated on the second Tuesday in June each year. It is a day to remember the amazing animals that have been part of our lives. We’ve been blessed with wonderful cats and dogs over the years. It is way too easy to dwell on how much we miss them or our final good-byes. I know they would much rather I remember the smiles and laughs they gave me instead of the tears. Today, in honor of some of my best friends, I am sharing funny stories so they can make you laugh too.
Meet George. He was my very first dog when I was in junior high school. A dog all my own. The ad in the newspaper was for FREE Cocker Spaniel puppies. I know Cocker Spaniels. I have seen Cocker Spaniels. George was no Cocker Spaniel but he was a great dog.
When I lived on my own in a tiny trailer, George joined a motorcycle “gang” down the street. It was really a garage where they worked on cars and motorcycles. He loved to hang out there with them while I was gone during the day. He’d come home with grease on his head after “work.”

BFTB NETWoof News June 11, 2018

Bentley Basset Hound: “Welcome to BFTB NETWoof News and Weather. We have fetched some good news along with a bizarre scam alert. Let’s get to our top story. Pierre?”
BFTB NETWoof News with two dogs anchoring
Pierre Westie: “Today we are adding our voice to the Just One Day movement. The idea is to get kill shelters and rescues across the country to agree not to euthanize ANY adoptable animals for 24 hours on June 11, 2018. You can see if your local shelters are participating by checking the list of shelters who have taken the pledge. This day could potentially save the lives of 10,000 companion animals that are killed each day in the USA. We are better than that. To quote founder Mike Fry; For you, it is Just One Day. For them, it is the rest of their lives.”

How to Reduce Your Dog's Shedding 90%

I belong to a couple of Basset Hound Facebook groups where pet parents come to show off their furbabies. Many of the posts are seeking answers to medical issues. I never give medical advice other than “Go to the vet immediately.”
There is one question that pops up almost every single day and that is about shedding. "How can I control my Basset's shedding?" Basset Hounds shed A LOT. Most people are not aware of just how much until they live with one. I ALWAYS answer this question with one word,
FURminator in package
We are Influencers and received this FURminator in exchange for an honest review. All opinions and experiences are my own and neither company is responsible for the contents of this article.
 Why the FURminator?
• It reduces shedding up to 90%
• Helps to encourage natural oil production
• Removes loose or dead undercoat
• Can reduce airborne allergens
• Recommended by veterinarians and groomers
• Easy to handle

A Doggone Funny Dedication

Bentley and Pierre eat twice a day at pretty much the same time. Actually, Bentley sets the time that best suits his belly and will hound me relentlessly until he is fed. I can adjust his dinner time a little but when the boy wants his breakfast, nobody is going to stay asleep. This is usually at 7:00a.m. They eat and we all go back to bed for a little while longer. I’ve been gradually feeding them later in the evening, so Pierre doesn’t go too long without something on his stomach. I have worked the time up from 3:30 to 5:00. The time slipped away from me yesterday and it was almost 6:00 when I went to start their Dr. Harvey’s.
If they gave dogs Academy Awards for drama, these two would have statuettes. Instead, they had this special dedication for me.

So Unappreciated

Westie and Basset Hound
Bentley Basset Hound: “Pierre, we are going to have to talk with Mom. This is Pet Appreciation Week and I’m just not feeling very appreciated. Are you?”
Pierre Westie: “Now that you mention it, I barked at a guy riding his scooter by the house today. She did not even say thank you. As a matter of fact, she told me to be quiet!”

How to Dispose of Pet Waste at Home

There is nothing like enjoying a summer evening sitting on your patio. I love ours and couldn’t wait to start enjoying it. That means no dog stink. You might remember when we first moved, I wrote a review on Frisco Dog Waste Bags that come in a convenient box for home use. With a smaller backyard, it is important to pick up the boys’ poop as soon as it happens.
How to Dispose of Pet Waste at Home
small garbage can
This little garbage can is what I bought to dispose of the used bags. The white bag you can see is a scented trash bag. When it is closed, no problem, no smell but when you lift the lid to add another bag…UGH! There had to be a better way.
