We love fall here in the
bayou. Our summers are so hot and humid
that the feel of crisp cool air is fantastic.
Although we don’t have the views they enjoy in Arkansas, the bayou does
put on a beautiful show. The tapestry of
colors comes with a price.
The changes in air
pressure and humidity can do a number on your pet’s skin, coat, and nails. Luckily, there are steps that we can take to
help our dog or cat feeling great.
1. Allergies:
Many animals suffer from seasonal allergies just like humans. Watery eyes, sneezy, and scratching could
mean your best friend is suffering from allergies. A trip to your vet can help with a diagnosis
and the proper treatment. Bentley’s eyes
water more now and our vet suggested OTC allergy eye drops. The drops do make a difference.
2. Seasonal
Shedding: If your dog sheds in the spring, then they will also shed in the
fall. Their short light summer coat is
shed to make room for a heavier winter coat.
3. Dry,
Flaky Skin: Just as our skin dries in the winter, our pet’s skin does too. While we can rub on lotions and creams, our
dogs can’t. Adding a little more healthy
fats and oils, especially omega fatty acids can help protect the natural
balance of the skin. Daily brushings and
fewer baths can help. When you do give a
bath, use a conditioning or soothing formula.
We are big fans of K9 Kelp in our home.
4. Nail
Care: Our dog’s nails can become more brittle in the cooler/cold months. Their nails can chip and splinter causing
painful snags. It’s important they are
receiving the proper amount of calcium in their diet. We take Bentley to our vet for his nail
trimmings. I am confident with every
aspect of his grooming except cutting nails.
He picks up on my apprehension and declines my request for his paws.

It may be Fall but it is unseasonally mild here of which we are glad. Good point about the nails. Have a super Saturday.

We love this time of year and the cool weather...getting adjusted for cold and snow! No allergies here, thankfully, but in the winter with the dry air, we have some static issues with our furs :)
ReplyDeleteWe must admit we are happy with the cooler weather.

I love your fall photo of the boys! You're so right about the shedding....Sheba is shedding like crazy right now, and I think I could brush her for hours and the fur would never stop coming off!

That’s a cute photo/frame. I wonder if cats’ nail get brittle to cos I’m snagging all over the place. The peeps can’t trim my clasws and the vet won’t try.
