Ear Ye! Ear Ye! Be it known that dirty dog ears stink!
Two of the things that people love about Basset Hounds are also the things that can be the dirtiest. I’m talking about their long velvety ears. They are the most noticeable feature on the breed and the first thing people want to feel when they meet Bentley. Luckily, he doesn’t mind the extra attention and loves having his ears rubbed almost as much as his belly.
Since his ears are so long and his nose is usually on the ground sniffing new smells, they get dragged around most of the time. The result is some very dirty ears. I clean his ears at least once a week. If I don’t stay vigilant on keeping them free of dirt and wax, he can get a nasty ear infection. No dog has time for that!
It doesn’t matter what breed of dog you have, regular ear cleaning is a must. When Dr. Harvey’s offered to send me their Herbal Ear Wash, I was excited to give it a try. Knowing the complete line of Dr. Harvey’s is free of chemicals, I knew this would be a gentle and safe cleaner. I avoid putting any type of chemicals on or in his body if at all possible.
The important thing about an ear cleaner is how well it works. After shaking the bottle, I apply some to a cotton pad and wipe the entire inner surface of his ears. You can easily apply it on a swab to get those creases where dirt likes to hide. Remember to never insert a swab into your dog’s ear canal. The Witch Hazel doesn’t dry the sensitive skin on the ear flap and quickly clears up any redness or rash. This wash is for external use only. Bentley’s ears smell so fresh and because it is all- natural, I can use it as often as I’d like without fear of irritation. A 4 oz. bottle is only $13.95. A little dab will do you so it lasts a long time.

Swiffer ears - we have the opposite - we have Swiffer tails :)
ReplyDeleteI love my long floppys too, Bentley, but they can cause trouble. Glad your ear wash works for you. We use our homemade recipe one time a month is all we need and it works great. I do have to get my ears blow dried a lot when they are wet on the bottoms or the furs start smelling musty! Such troubles!

ReplyDeleteI can see how Bentley's long ears would get dirty quickly ;-) Buzz manages to get his dirty every now & then when he goes crazy outside in the yard with his ball. Missy's ears always have been amazingly clean. I call her ears "princess ears" because of it..

Sheba has the worst ears of all 3 dogs, and I always hated the medicine-y smelling ear stuff we used to use. Now I only look for all natural cleaners, it makes it more pleasant for all of us! Theirs sounds great.
