PetSafe's Collar Safety Awareness Week

Purple PetSafe KeepSafe Break-Away collar
Barking from the Bayou, LLC received a PetSafe KeepSafe Collar in exchange for an honest review We only share products and services that we use and believe will benefit our readers. PetSafe is not responsible for the contents of this article.
Have you ever thought of the dangers your dog’s collar can pose for them? It is estimated that 19 million dogs wear a collar every day. Unfortunately, each year there are approximately 26,000 strangulations due to collars. That is why our friends at PetSafe® are sponsoring the 2nd annual Collar Safety Awareness Week. It is a great time to check around your home and yard for possible accidents waiting to happen. It’s also a great time to discover the KeepSafe® Break-Away Safety Collar.
Quote from Toni Mark
Can your dog’s collar become a noose?
The plain and simple truth is yes. One of the first things we buy our new puppy is their very own collar. It is great for identification and taking walks but it can also cause injury and in some cases even death. Here are a few places where your dog’s collar can become a noose:
• Crates
• Fences
• Heating/Cooling Vents
• Playing with other dogs
• Sticks
• Shrubs
• Furniture
• Decks
• Their own paws
This is the ingenious Break-Away feature of the PetSafe KeepSafe collar
The KeepSafe Break-Away Safety Collar is designed to prevent our dogs from getting entangled by their collars. It has a patented buckle that will release when pressure is applied. That means that if your dog’s collar ever gets stuck on something, the buckle releases and falls off without causing harm.

It is important to select the proper size collar. You should adjust the collar so that you can fit two fingers under it. There is a size chart here. You might be wondering how you can walk your dog if the collar breaks away. Don’t worry, there are 2 D-rings to prevent the buckle from breaking away.
Here is a video from the inventor of the Break-Away Safety Collar, Tenney Mudge. She lost her beloved dog Chinook to a collar accident. Now, her invention is saving other people’s pups.

  4. With the pulling we do sometimes, we would be afraid it would just pop open. Our collars are loose enough to go over our heads if we get hung up. Madison doesn't wear her collar in her kennel for safety reasons. Collars definitely can be dangerous.

    1. The KeepSafe Break-Away collar can be used with the 2 D-rings (one on either side) for walks so if they pull, the break away feature won't be triggered.

  7. What a great idea. We were so careful when Luke was a puppy and still staying in his crate, that we did not leave his collar on. We actually did see it get stuck on his crate one time (we were right there), so it definitely can happen. We used to have these for our cats as well, when we had outdoor cats.

  13. Looks like a very smart and safe collar! :D I remember in the past when my dogs were puppies and were not used to collar, they would try to take it off and used to get their feet stuck and it would've been so dangerous if I was not there. Safety collar seems so useful! <3
