2017's Biggest Pet Health Threat

Every year people resolve to lose weight and exercise more. I can’t remember a year when it wasn’t on my list of things to do better. It will be a goal again this year…after my New Year’s Day dinner of black-eyed peas, cabbage and ham. Some traditions are just too important to overlook.
This year, instead of joining a gym or going on an unsustainable diet, why not pledge to move more with your dog? Obesity in dogs has reached epidemic proportions with 53.8% of them being overweight or obese. According to Petplan Veterinary Advisory Board member and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, Dr. Ernie Ward, “It’s no surprise that the biggest health threat to pets in 2017 is obesity.”
I shared how Bentley and Pierre have been able to maintain their ideal weight last week in “How My Dogs Lost Weight with Dr. Harvey's Veg-to-Bowl.”  It is suggested that 30 minutes of play each day will keep those extra pounds away. Having an overweight pup is not only costing you money in food and treats, according to Petplan, it is will cost you more in veterinary bills.

Today we are lighting a candle for Easy Weimaraner as he makes his way home one last time. We also want to remember all of the wonderful four-legged friends that we lost in 2016. God bless each of you.

  4. We live in a boot camp here. Mom doesn't want any overweight pets in our house...well, cat bro Bert is an exception, but that is a whole different story and he has lost a lot of weight and is not that heavy anymore. Working out is so fun together!

  7. If I'm gonna sweat, I'd much rather do it with my BFF than some stranger in a leotard. With days getting progressively longer, I am looking forward to more time spent outside walking with the fur-kids. ღ

  9. Mom makes sure I get exercise outside if the weather permits or inside when we have to. She thinks she's helping me, but I am also helping her. Plus she weighs me every week!

  10. I heard somewhere that if your dog is overweight, then YOU are not getting enough exercise!

  12. It is hard this time of year when the temps are so cold and we have so much snow. My goal is to get more fit so maybe Mabel and I can think about doing agility training in addition to Rally & Obedience.

  16. I never really thought about the financial impact of obesity in pets. But you're right. All that extra chow can add up to a huge vet bill! Good reason to keep those little pup feet moving.

  18. That is a great way to commit to your goal! I've heard that it is always easier when you get a friend involved.:) Weight loss is definitely on my list too (just like every year). I guess I'm going to have to teach my kitties to walk with me!

  19. When Luke joined our family I started spending far more time outdoors playing with all of the dogs. It didn't just benefit them, it benefited me as well! We're all in better shape these days.
