How to Overreact When Your Senior Pet is Sick

Bentley has been sick over the last week and frankly, it gave us quite a scare. He is on the mend and doing a bit better each day. I wrote out a thousand-word post describing everything that happened in excruciating detail but discarded it to make it more entertaining for you and me. I’ve decided to title it,
How to Overreact When Your Senior Dog/Cat is Sick
1. As soon as you notice a change in your pet, observe every single move and analyze it to death.

Has he always slept so hard?
Is he limping?
His nose is dry!
Why isn’t he in here begging for dinner?
Is his poop too loose?
Is he licking his lips more than normal?
What is wrong with him??
2. Worry over everything they do that seems “off” to you.
Be sure you wake up throughout the night to make sure your dog/cat is still breathing.
Worry
Cry because you love him so much, they are seniors and don’t feel well. Bless their heart.
Worry more.
3. Visit the veterinarian
Once you know a vet visit is needed, wake up early so you can be the first to call for a chance to be seen that day.
Arrive early so you know help is close by as you try to ignore the fact that the animal you are so desperately worried about is now smooshing with the receptionist and getting a pet.
When you speak to the vet tech and the veterinarian, give them w-a-a-a-y more information than necessary.
Kiss your pet good-bye as they go back for tests as if they were going off to war.
Cry and promise you’ll see them in a little bit.
Worry.
4. Waiting for the results
When the vet calls to ask you to come back for the test results as promised, immediately expect the worst.
Pray and cry while you wait for the vet.
Remember, you’ve seen movies and test results never turn out positive.
Try not to look like a blubbering idiot in front of the veterinary staff. Fail miserably.
Brace yourself for the results.
Don’t worry about overreacting because the truth is
you love your pet and they love you. Your vet knows how you feel and is happy that you trust them with such a beloved member of your family.
**Even if you have a tendency to overreact,
under NO circumstances should you EVER Google a sick pet's symptoms.
No matter what is wrong with them, if you Google it, the answers will not help you but only make you more certain they are going to die.

**Bentley’s Update
We are happy that Bentley’s blood work was great and his x-rays showed nothing more than a swollen stomach. He was given three prescriptions and has had a lot of bed rest. We have not left him home alone since he became sick. He needed us and we were happy to adjust our schedule to make sure he knew we were here for him. It took us feeding him little bites of food from our hands for a few days but today he came in the kitchen and ate with Pierre! It is the first time in a week that we’ve seen him acting like our sweet old man. Thank you for all the prayers and well wishes on Facebook. Hopefully, we will all be well and ready to bring you BFTB NETWoof News next week!

  1. We are so happy that the results brought no bad news to you..... it is hard to stay calm when we see that something could be wrong... and we try to ask our doc first, before we ask dr.google (that is the hardest part, honestly)

  8. We're glad Bentley is feeling better! Mom laughed at your overreaction post but kept nodding her head.

    Your Pals,

PS - Mom and Dad keep talking about something that has been on back order for a few weeks now.

  9. Bless your heart and Bentley's. I know 100% what you mean. I do so many of the very same things you did with Madi as she became a senior. Once I started dialing the vet 3 min early and kept hitting redail until they answered. I WAS GONNA BE FIRST. Once at the Vet #3 I did exactly what you did. All this says is L O V E!!! in return for our pet's unconditional L O V E

    Hugs and purrs to all
