The Dangers of Recliners

*This article originally appeared on Barking from the Bayou on August 2, 2018. We are on vacation and will return on September 2, 2019.
Me: “I’m going to be totally honest with you right from the start of this post. I struggled with whether I should share this story. I feel so horrible about what happened but as a blogger, I feel it’s my responsibility to tell you my mistake in hopes of preventing you from doing the same thing.”

Me: “Yes, I mean…no, I did not try to kill you but yes, I am going to tell them what happened.

Summer Safety Tips for Dogs

Me: “Bentley! Pierre! Y’all come here. It’s time to remind everyone of some important summer pet safety tips.”
Bentley: “We prefer the term ‘furry family member’ safety tips and we are ready to roll.”

Pierre: “I always like to start off with a stern warning about toxic waste. Avoid it at all cost. That is some nasty stuff.”

May Is National Microchip Your Pet Month

Me: “May has been declared National Chip Your Pet month. I thought it would be a great time to remind our readers about the importance of having their pet microchipped.”

Where is the Halloween Fun?

Bentley: “This Saturday is Halloween and I am so excited! Think of all the candy we can get. Chocolate bars, gum, caramels, and more chocolate.”
Pierre: “I can hardly wait. I have my costume and I am ready to go score some major treats. Except for the orange and black wrapped candies. Seriously, does anyone eat those?”
Me: “I hate to break it to y’all, but you boys can’t go trick or treating for candy. You know that chocolate can be a killer for dogs. As a matter of fact, there isn’t a safe human candy for dogs to eat. You will have to settle for some pumpkin dogs treats.”

The Dog's Missing

There are three little words that all pet parents dread; “The dog’s missing!” Yet each day those words are repeated in homes across the country. Like all disasters, you need to be prepared in the event it happens.
How to safeguard your pet
·        Never let your dog run loose or unsupervised.
·        Keep a collar on your pet. How many times have you heard, “He isn’t wearing a collar, may we keep him?”

Pierre: “Well, I know it’s not time for my birthday again.  Whatever it is, will there be cake?”

Five Steps to a Pet Safe New Year's Eve

It is almost New Year of 2015 and I have just gotten used to writing 2014!  We keep New Year’s Eve pretty low-key around here.  When the kids were growing up, we exploded fireworks.  They have never really bothered our dogs.  In fact, we had a miniature Schnauzer that loved to watch fireworks.
Bentley absolutely HATES fireworks.  He is certain that we are under military attack.  Bathroom breaks must be timed very carefully.  If he is in the middle of some serious business and a firework booms,

Christmas Pet Safety

Bentley: “Can you believe Christmas is next week?  I am so excited to see what Santa Paws is going to bring me.  I’ve been a very good boy and…PIERRE!  What are you doing dude?”
Pierre: “Nothing, I was just about to see if this potpourri is as tasty as it smells.  Here, smell this.  Don’t you think it’d be yummy?”
Bentley: “Put that down and go wipe your paws.  Potpourri is among the potential dangers that the American Veterinary Medical Association warns us about during the holidays.  You shouldn’t even be left alone in a room with potpourri, candles, or other holiday decorations.”

School Supply Dangers ~ Blogville Safety Week

Bentley: “Hey Pierre, it’s time to write our post for Blogville’s Safety Week extravaganza!  We’d like to thank Mayor Madi and Police Commish Sarge for allowing us to visit Blogville Elementary for our lesson.  Police Chief Sidebite drove us here in his official car with the lights flashing!  That sure beats riding the school bus.  Mom even packed us a lunch.”
Pierre: “This is a great classroom.  I’m going to sit up front, so I can be the teacher’s pet.  We are learning about School Supply Safety today.  It looks pretty interesting so far.  What kind of safety concerns can we find in a classroom?  I mean other than bullies, slamming our paws in lockers, falling out of my chair, and algebra?”
Bentley: “Why is algebra a safety concern?”
Pierre: “I heard Gramma say that Algebra kicked her butt.  I am steering clear of that ruffian.
"I already feel smarter!"
Just look for me in the reading circle during recess.”
Bentley: “Ummm, okie dokie.  Maybe we can examine a couple of the kid’s lunch boxes and backpacks for safety hazards.  There is the Lost and Found box.  Go rummage around and find something we can use.  We are going to talk about the dangerous things that pets can get into this time of year.  School kids are very sometimes messy.  It’s amazing what trouble a dog can find in their stuff besides uneaten homework.”

July is Pet Safety Month

July is Pet Safety month.  The summer months are always fun with outdoor activities, vacations, flowers blooming, swimming, and barbecues.  While all of these things are meant to be enjoyed, they can pose a safety hazard to our pets.  I asked Bentley and Pierre to do a public service announcement on things they feel are important to safety issues.  I think that maybe I ought to have explained a bit more.

Hurricane Preparedness for Pets

June is an exciting month for many summer events.  School is out for summer, blushing brides are preparing to walk down the aisle, swimming pools open, and families hit the roads for vacations.  Unfortunately, not everything about June is wonderful.
The Atlantic hurricane season officially kicked off June 1st.  According to Federal
Hurricane season
June 1st thru November 30th
forecasters this will hopefully be a slower than usual season.  They are predicting eight to thirteen tropical storms and three to six hurricanes.  Of course, there is no way to tell whether any of these potential storms will strike the U.S. coastline.
