Dog Coats Made By De

When it comes time to buy clothes, I envy people with normal shaped dogs.
Bentley: “Wait just a minute, Mom. I don’t like how this post is starting. I have a feeling that your next words were going to be something about my shape NOT being normal. Sigh, you cut me to the quick.”

Me: “I wasn’t going to use those exact words. What if I describe your shape as unique? Let’s face it, there aren’t too many dogs that are 23” long and have legs that are about 5” tall.” Psst…I’m rounding up to 5” but don’t tell him.
Bentley: “It just so happens that I am the perfect size and shape for a Basset Hound. Don’t you remember the post where you explained my parts? I can’t help that most designers make clothes that fit “leggier” dogs. There are a lot of people that like to dress their pets. Don’t they know that Bassets want to rock the fashion world too?”
Me: “It doesn’t seem that the 'big guys' are catering to unique sizes. That is why I was so happy to discover Made by De on Etsy. She specializes in custom coats and clothes, but she can make just about anything you need. When I looked on her site under Specialty Dog Items, I found snoods, grooming pajamas, dog slinkies, belly bands, well, you get the idea.”
Made By De list of items for sale.
Bentley: “It is a wonder that you were able to tear yourself away. I know how you love looking at dog clothes. Did you order your best pal anything? It is winter and as you pointed out, I’m very low to the ground. It gets cold down here.”
Me: “It just so happens that I ordered you a fantastic winter coat. Made by De used your exact measurements so that it is a perfect fit. Here, try it on.”
Bentley: “Oh. My. Dog. I look dashing! The blue waterproof outer material along with the brown flannel lining really brings out my eyes. Don’t ya’ think? Oohhhh, it feels as good as it looks. I love that it closes with Velcro. You will be able to adjust it. I can’t stand things that are tight around my neck.”
Me: "With Velcro straps on the neck and tummy, there's no need to pull it over your head and there are no leg holes to navigate. Stepping into things can be a problem when you have short unique shaped legs. It is perfect for our walks on cold windy days. We don’t have to worry if you decide to waddle through a mud puddle because Made by De’s coats are machine washable.

Bentley: “I could not be prouder of my new dog coat. It is handmade in the U.S.A. to withstand a lot of wear and tear. That means if we ever take up rock or mountain climbing, I can wear it. It doesn’t make my butt look big either.”
Me: “You look so handsome! We need to see what other ‘must-haves’ that Made by De has in her shop. I am thinking you’d look precious in some doggy pajamas.”
Bentley:  “I wonder if she could make me some red silk pajamas and a robe. You could take a photo of me and I could send to my sweetie for Valentine’s Day.”
Me: “I don’t see them on her Etsy store but she does customize. I will definitely be ordering more from Made by De. It is wonderful to have someone that will sew to fit any shape dog. The quality of craftsmanship is second to none and you can tell it was sewn with loving care. I always feel good supporting independent businesses. With FREE SHIPPING to US destinations and low worldwide shipping prices, everyone can have their own custom fitted wardrobe!”
Bentley: “I have already found more pawsome things for you to order for me! There are still a lot of cold days ahead and I want to stay stylishly warm! Made by De will make it happen!”

  1. That's a super idea! We will visit that etsy store :o) it is not easy to find a coat for me, because of my deep chest... I'm special and not a guy for prêt-à-porter fashion :o)

  2. Bentley, you do look handsome. We're happy it doesn't get too cold here. Roxy the fur challenged does have a coat, but like all of us, she can't move if it's on, and she looks like she's being punished.

  5. I'm one of those odd sizes too, Bentley. Thankfully, I don't need a coat, but if I did, I would want one that covered my belly more as that is what gets cold fastest. Glad you are liking yours and it looks nice on you.

  13. That is one sharp looking coat, Bentley, I love the color on you! My Husky is a bit long in the back too, I have trouble finding anything that fits right. I love Velcro closing on dog apparel, it's much easier.

  23. Sorry Bentley - you're not normal. That's because you're extra special. And I love the coat, it suits you.

  24. Nice threads, Bentley. I've noticed a lot of dog clothes seem to be fairly generic in their sizes and don't take into account deep chested dogs, long dogs, etc. We'll be checking out De on Etsy.
P.S. Blue is definitely your color! ღ

  29. So cute! Bentley looks great in blue (or should I say blue looks great on Bentley)! :) It's great to find pet attire that fits our long-backed dogs!

  30. This is cute. One of my goals is to learn to knit only so I can make dog sweaters (maybe custom sizes, who knows?) My schnoodle is a bit longer than he is round so fitting is an issue with him. Really big dogs are even harder to fit - I had to find a coat big enough for a lab at a horse supply store. (It was for dogs, not horse. I guess the dogs are just bigger at barns).

  31. This is awesome! I have trouble finding coats for Walter - what a great etsy store, Thank you!

  32. I love custom finds. Off the rack coats often seem an inch or more too short for Tashi! Thanks for the great review =)

  33. These look like great coats for the Pacific Northwest where the winter is a bit drizzly!

  34. You look darn cute in your coat. When we had two big doggies here they used to when their red raincoats when it was wet outside!

  35. Nice coat Bentley! You look great in blue!

  36. Theo is like Bentley in that he has a deep chest and short legs. When we put a coat on him, he just freezes like a statue. Eventually he'll walk around, but you can tell he isn't enjoying it. He loves to burrow under blankets, I'm not sure what the difference is.

  37. You look really cute in your new coat, Bentley! There is nothing wrong with having a "unique" body shape. I have a "unique" body shape when it comes to clothes too. I think it is great that Made by De makes coats custom for the pup!
