The Baby Birds

A few weeks ago, we posted a photo of bird eggs that a robin continually builds in one of my hanging plants.  I asked how to keep her from building the nests.  It’s not that I don’t love seeing the little birds, I do.  The problem is that bird eggs bring snakes.  It never fails that when the eggs show up; some slimy snake comes to eat them.  I enjoy the eggs and the baby birds…the snakes, not so much.  Of course, once the eggs are there, I can’t possibly get rid of the nest.  Bad karma and all that, plus I couldn’t kill an unborn bird and live with myself.  Well, you’ll be happy to know that the birds arrived and they have left the nest.  Bentley and Pierre were disappointed that the little ballerinas from the Wizard of Oz’s Lullabye League weren’t inside the eggs!

Bentley is in a photo contest on Love is being owned by Husky.  Please click here and give us a vote!
Thanks so much!

We are joining Ruckus the Eskie for another great Sepia Saturday.  Have a wonderful Saturday and enjoy these other sepia blogs.

  2. We don't have snake problems here but the crows kill the baby ducklings which is such a shame. Have a super Saturday.
    Best wishes Molly.

    1. Yes, they don't stay too long. It's not so bad since we have the planters out on the front porch where the dogs aren't. When we had them in the backyard where they boys play, we had so many snakes trying to get the eggs that I was scared for the pups.

  4. Love seeing these baby robins! We have watched a robin build a nest in a bush by the deck and lose 2 clutches - one, the nest tipped, the second, something knocked the hatchlings on the ground and we didn't discover them until they were dead (what would do that and not eat them?). Now she is trying again high in a tree and is sitting on another clutch of eggs. We have our fingers crossed for her.

    1. They do build in the weirdest places. I enjoy watching them and their eggs are beautiful. I hope this clutch survives for you.

    1. Thank you for voting. I often wonder if the birds that come back are the same or maybe the babies all grown up.

    1. Yes, the snakes are a major downfall to having baby birds. I'm terrified of all snakes.

  7. Snakes - YIKES!! We had some birdies try to build a nest every year on the front porch. Actually, one year they succeeded so that was why the other years were a problem. This is the first year they did NOT try it. BUTT we have no answers!

    1. I always say that I'm going to put something in the planter to discourage them from building a nest. I guess the early bird gets the planter! They always beat me to it each year! LOL!

  8. We don't have a snake problem but whenever birds choose our hanging plants as their nursery the dogs and cat circle for weeks waiting for a morsel of baby bird to drop down. I have to watch them all so closely to make sure that no carnage happens when it is flight time.

    1. The boys have never seen them. Pierre looks out the window where they are but he is concentrating on lizards.

  9. My dad and stepmom are filling in the spaces under their deck/porch with Styrofoam blocks to keep the birds from building nests under there. Maybe putting a few little decorations like little gnomes or statues would fill the space up and keep the birds from nesting in your plants.

    1. I'll try that! The mama birds are very fast at building a nest and laying their eggs.

  10. Love the bird's nest! We had one outside our window, way high up, but they abandoned it for some reason. We are lucky because we don't have snakes.

    1. Yes you are. We usually encounter a couple of snakes each year, but when the bird eggs appear it just draws them. I'm definitely not a snake fan!

  11. Snakes! Glad the baby birds made it. We have two bird houses on our garage, because the one was so busy we added another. There are families in and out of there nearly year round. Needless to say I get very harassed just hanging out in my own backyard! And that's the thanks I get when I find the ones that fall out of the nest (and live). Love Dolly

    1. hahaha! Ungrateful birds! My hummingbirds can be pretty busy. I have one scout that comes every year and buzzes right in front of my face, then flies away. I always fill up my feeder after its visit and it brings friends back in about a week.

  12. that photo is soooooooooooooo precious!!!!!! The only birds we ever had make nests were mourning doves. We are on the second floor of a condo building in Michigan so thankfully we don't have to worry about snakes! I can certainly understand your concern, and thank goodness the birds made it unscathed!!

  14. Oh dear, I wouldn't want snakes too! :( Hope you find a solution! We don't have that kind of problem since we live in a flat, so nothing helpful to suggest.

  15. Oh, we have LOTS of burdie nest all overs!! Butts, we are lucky, we don't have any snakes around here (that I know of, that is!) Butts we do have lots of other critters that like to come and snack on the burdie eggs if they can gets to them. Our burdies are most innovative, and find hard to gets to places to build their nests so the invaders don't get em'!
Your burdies are most FABulous I must say! I hopes the snakes stay away, so your Moms doesn't squeal and stuffs! BOL
