Pet Parents Say the Darnedest Things

As pet parents, we occasionally say things that only other pet parents can understand. Everyone else thinks we are a little strange.
Have you ever found yourself saying these things?

1. “I was talking to the dog.”
This conversation happens several times each day between me and my husband. Question: “What did you say?” Response: “Nothing, I was talking to the dog.”
2. “Is this a dog-friendly event?”
It is our version of “Are the kids invited?”  If the answer is “no” pet parents usually choose to stay home with the ones who really ‘get them’ a.k.a. the dogs.
3. “Do you have that shirt in a 28” chest with 3” sleeves?”
Dressing your pet is a hot-button issue. My dogs don’t mind and I love putting them in cute things. Finding clothes that fit the debonair Basset can be a challenge.
4. “Is that dried slobber?”
We already know the answer is “yes” but how did it end up on the ceiling?
5. “What are you rolling in?”
We have all been there; a freshly bathed and groomed dog on its first trip outside will inevitably find the stinkiest stink in the yard and roll in it.
6. “Company is coming. I have to wash the sheets.”
This is not a reference to overnight guests. I am talking about the sheets that we all use to cover the couches.
7. “Are you wiping something on me?”
I know that a dog’s perspective is different from ours, but how do we look like a ginormous napkin to them?

8. Do you want to go outside? Do you want to come back inside?
It is so exciting when our pups learn to signal when they need to go outside. After 257 times each day, the thrill is gone.
9. “Can your dog come to my dog’s birthday paw-ty?”
Admit to buying invitations, plates, and decorations for your pet’s birthday, Gotcha Day or graduations. Try to resist renting a bouncy house, though. They don’t usually work out well.
10.     OMD! Spell it or the dog will know what you are saying!”

Pet parents spell words such as w-a-l-k, F-r-i-s-b-e-e, o-u-t-s-i-d-e, t-r-e-a-t and most importantly; v-e-t. Warning: dogs can spell.

  6. Yes, those words are spoken around here and often. I go everywhere with my pawrents - but when they are planning events for South Suburban Chihuahua, they always ask if they are dog friendly events...

  8. Mom talks to us all the time. I'm sure a lot of folks think she is odd, but we are so used to it, it seems totally normal!

  9. This is great! I have said them all. I like #3 because when I see a cute shirt or outfit, I wonder if it would fit Miss Edie ;)

  11. Before I got Hershey I'd never uttered the phrase "stop licking the sofa," now, it seems to be a weekly occurrence.

  13. I find it amazing the 13 year old can pretend to be deaf, but say cookie and he can hear that word from the far reaches of the yard.

  19. My husband and I are guilty of the "I was talking to the cat" line, and the "Is that Sophie snot/boogers?" in reference to a greenish brown dried spot on the couch/rug/comforter/my hair!!! lol

  24. So funny! We have at least 5 pet parents say "This is like dropping the kids off at the daycare" when they drop their pets off at the grooming salon. Love this! :)

  25. So funny! I definitely do say some of these things (just the kitty version). I talk to Manna all of the time. She understands quite a lot more than people think! :)

  39. The big one in our house "Why are you on the table?" "Is the table your personal napping spot?" Yeah no joke. . . Tabletop Memphis loves to jump on the table. When she does it when friends are over . . . they think we are crazy!

  40. Bwahaha! And very timely. I've been pushing Liam the pug around in a stroller lately, since he hurt his back and can't go for long walks right now. I can't tell you how many people have roared up to us, hoping to see a human baby. And oh, the looks they give me when they see a slobbery pug inside!

  41. I love this! This is so true! I tell Rooney when I leave the house, "Have a good Rooney day!" and then when I get home I ask him how his day was, if he took any naps, etc. LOL.

  42. Hahaha...love your 'discussions.' I think all us pawrents talk to our pups-sometimes they are the only ones to pay attention to us! :)
