It has been at least a year since I began anxiously waiting for The Secret Life of Pets movie debut. Let me be upfront with you and say that I LOVE cartoons or as they call them now, animated movies. There aren’t many Disney, Pixar or DreamWorks movies or songs that I can’t recite verbatim. When my daughter was young, we read the books and then watched the movies. It’s just a guess but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen The Little Mermaid and Beauty & the Beast more than 587 times. I can’t imagine a time when I won’t enjoy laughing and getting lost in the magical world of animation.
The Secret Life of Pets from Illumination opened last week and it was perfect timing because my brother was visiting from N.Y.C. He was excited to go watch it along with my husband. Were we the oldest people in the theater? That’s not important. Suffice to say there were a gazillion kids crammed in the matinee. When the movie began, it was quite with the exception of laughter. I was so relieved!
There were many great scenes in the movie but my favorites are at the beginning. The writers and artists definitely know their cats, dogs, and hamsters. I never give away the story but if you love pets, you will enjoy this movie. Many big name stars lend their voices to The Secret Life of Pets. The main characters are Max who is voiced by Louis C. K. and his new “brother” Duke with the voice of a hilarious Eric Stonestreet. You’ll also recognize Kevin Hart as the insane rabbit Snowball. (Imagine Happy Bunny on steroids) The addition of Pops, a grumpy Basset Hound with a disability and the voice of Dana Carvey stole my heart. The clips of New York are gorgeous. My brother really loved the way his city was portrayed.
The plot revolves around Max not wanting to share his life with a new big brown fluffy dog and tries to set Duke up as a troublemaker. When their mom leaves them together, chaos and hijinks ensue. Although the movie was not what I had expected it to be, I enjoyed it immensely. I recommend you grab some popcorn and settle into a cool theater for 90 minutes of fun and laughs.
Bentley and Pierre aren’t allowed in our theaters but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t getting involved in the hype of this summer’s big hit. Thanks to our friends at PetSmart, they both have the Secret Life of Pets bandanas and they were given the character toys as a gift on the red carpet at the BlogPaws conference Nose-to-Nose awards. They chose the stars Max and Duke to be their favorite characters. You can always count on PetSmart to know exactly what our pets want and need to be happy and stylish!

We will most likely see it when it comes out on DVD. That way Jimmy can enjoy it too! Wilson isn't a movie watcher so he won't really care....

The commercials crack me up. I don't go to the movies much, but I am an avid "on demand" contributor. I think it's wonderful that you were able to see the movie with your brother and husband. Now I will smile whenever I see those (or any animated film ) commercials.
ReplyDeleteIt's on my must-see list, for sure! I'm with you. I adore animation.

ReplyDeleteIt looks like such a cute movie! I can't drag my hubby to a theater though so we have to wait until the come out on DVD or TV movie channels!
ReplyDeleteJan, Wag 'n Woof Pets
This movie seems so cute! I don't think I will ever be able to talk my husband into going to the theater to see it with me (he isn't into animated movies), but maybe I'll just go by myself. Animated movies are a lot of fun - especially when they involve pets.

This was definitely a fun movie! My parents were visiting at the time it was released, so we went to go see it. My ten-year-old really enjoyed it, and so did we. Seeing how the animators/ voice-over actors portrayed each character/ pet was definitely a high point; we who are blessed to have fur-kids in the family know what individual and awesome personalities each one is!
