Pierre Westie: “Ugh! Are you eating corn chips? You know that I can’t eat that kinda stuff. Actually, no dogs should eat corn chips but I definitely smell them. It’s just you and me here so…”
Bentley Basset Hound: “What are you yammering about? You woke me up from a sound sleep to ask me if I was eating corn chips? Have you ever seen me eat a corn chip? Think about it while I finish my nap.”
Pierre: “Sure, go ahead. I’ll just use my incredible sense of smell to figure out where the smell is coming from all by myself.”
Bentley: “Well, why didn’t you say there was a need for a nose expert. This is a job for a Basset’s nose.
*The Bayou Boys sniffed all over their beds, the floor, and finally ended up at Bentley’s paws.
Pierre: “Uh-oh! The reason I accused you of eating corn chips is because the smell is coming from you or rather, your PAWS!!
Bentley: “Ohhhh, THAT corn chip smell! Let me set your little Westie mind at ease.
Corn Chip Feet is usually nothing to get too upset about. Dogs walk through a lot of funky stuff during the day then we lick our paws. We also sweat from the pads of our feet. The combination is a perfect place for yeast and bacteria to live.”
Pierre: “Are you trying to tell me that two particular bacteria Proteus or Pseudomonas are the reason for the chip odor? That bacteria duo likes to mingle together in the fur between a dog’s nails and around his pads. That is why I get my fur trimmed between my toes when I go to the groomer.”
Bentley: “People used to believe the smell was from too much corn in a dog’s diet. This is not true, but you should try to avoid foods that list corn and other fillers as the first ingredients.
The truth is that corn chip feet are a natural and common effect of bacteria. You can wipe our paws when we come inside, or a quick paw wash will usually take care of the odor.”
Pierre: “I’m glad that we cleared up the mystery of the smell and that we did it on National Corn Chip Day!”
