How to Keep Your Dog Cool this Summer

Summer is here and the heat is set on high. Here deep in the hot of Texas, we are looking for ways to stay cool. Of course, staying inside with the air conditioning is recommended for seniors and senior dogs which we do most afternoons. Temperatures can reach the triple digits by noon, so we ride bikes and let the boys enjoy the outdoors early.
Bentley has always loved to lay out in the sunshine. The hotter, the better. In the past, we have let him get his fill of heat. As a 12 ½ year old, there is a greater concern of heat stroke, so we limit his time in the direct sun. Their backyard horseplay is also discouraged in the afternoon heat.
Due to the coronavirus, we do most of our shopping on Amazon, so I set out to find some products to help us survive the dog days of summer. We are Amazon affiliates so if you purchase through these links, we might receive a tiny commission. (Thanks so much!)
How to Keep Your Dog Cool this Summer
Chillz Cooling Mat
This mat can be used in the car, outdoors or indoors and keeps your dog cool with a pressure activated gel. This lightweight, portable, and puncture resistant mat comes in four sizes. No need to freeze or chill mat to maintain a cool surface. Simply allow air to cool and recharge mat between uses.
Jasonwell Foldable Pet Pool
I can’t think of a better way to cool off than a dip in the pool. This would be fun for the Bayou Boys and the grandkids! The fact that it folds up is a BIG plus for me. It is available in FIVE sizes so you can find the perfect fit for your pup and yard.
PetSafe Drinkwell
Fresh water is essential to survive in this heat. Dehydration can happen quickly and access to fresh water can be a matter of life or death. The PetSafe Drinkwell provides 2 gallons of filtered water and is the perfect size for cats and dogs.
Silicone ice trays
Nothing refreshes like a frozen treat after a walk. Fill these silicone ice trays with flavored water, broth, or fruit and freeze. They are perfect for the pups to take in the backyard and crunch.
Ruffwear cooling vest
This cooling vest provides protection from the sun as well as evaporative cooling. It has 3 layers for cooling. The outer layer reflects heat and facilitates evaporation. The middle layer absorbs and stores water. The inner mesh lining keeps your dog dry and comfy. To activate, you soak it in water, wring it out and put it on your dog. You can add water to continue cooling on hikes or other outdoor activities where your pup could overheat.
Pawz Dog boots
There are times when it is just too hot for your dog to walk on the pavement. If you cannot hold the back of your hand on the surface for five seconds, it is too hot. This can result in severe burns to your dog’s pads. The solution is Pawz dog boots. They come in a variety of sizes and you can cut a tiny “v” shape in the top to allow air flow. The Bayou Boys wear them and have no problem walking or running in them.
We hope some of these ideas help you beat the summer heat. If you have any secrets to keeping cool, please share them in the comments.

  1. You two are always the coolest dogs around!

  2. we bought two cooling mats... they both refused to use them... but it was comfy for our feet too LOL

  3. Hi Bentley and Pierre. Those are some great products for keeping cool! That swamp cooler vest is especially awesome. :)

  4. There is no need to discourage horse play here because when it is so hot out, we don't even want to be outside, let alone play. Thankfully, we are on the way towards winter. Stay safe, boys!

  5. Love that cooling mat. Wonder if they make 'em big enough for peeps! This has been quite the hot summer and we're counting the days until autumn arrives. 67 days to go, but who's counting? 🤣

  6. Thanks for the good advice! We've had a lot of really hot weather here is WNY lately too.

  7. All great products! Luke is pretty content to just hang out in the cool tile floor on hot days. We had quite a hot spell too, but then it moderated to more normal temperatures for a bit. I hear the hot is coming back again this weekend though! Of course our hot is probably normal for you there in TX. LOL

  8. Some of those things would even work well for us cats!

  9. Great tips to keep cool. Thanks for hosting the parade.

  10. Love the foldable pet pool! We know a few people who have them and they hold up really well!

  11. Our dogs ADORE their puppy pool! As soon as the weather gets warmer, it comes out in the corner of our yard. We change the water regularly so that it's always cool and refreshing.

I'd love to hear from you! Bark back!
