February
is National Pet Dental Health Month. It
is important to include a good oral hygiene program in your dog’s day. This should include brushing their teeth and
providing dental treats. It’s not all
about fresh breath, but it would be nice to have “dog-breath” become a positive
phrase.
Over
80% of dogs show signs of dental disease by the time they’re three-
years old. That percentage is incredibly high and completely avoidable. If unhealthy oral conditions are not treated, a dog runs the risk of toxic absorption in their bloodstreams. If possible, it is best to begin your dog on a dental routine at an early age. Introduce your pup to a toothbrush and let them get used to you having your hands near their mouth. Brushing your dog’s teeth should be an everyday occurrence, but at least three times a week. Begin with a wet toothbrush designed for dogs. If you use toothpaste, make sure it is also for dogs. Human toothpaste contains fluoride and foaming agents that may be toxic or upset your dog’s gastrointestinal tract, if they swallow it. It’s not necessary to use a paste, but your dog may like the taste. Dog dental health is important to the overall health of your four-legged companion. Dr. Patrick Mahaney has three great tips for pet dental care that you can read here.

We all know there are hectic days when brushing the dog’s teeth just isn’t going to happen. On those days, it is especially important to include a dental chew. Our favorite place to shop for all of our dental products is the local PetSmart® store. They have an incredible selection of chews, treats, pastes, and toothbrushes. Click here to find a store near you.
One that is a hit around our home is
Authority® Dental Sticks. They are star-shaped
to clean your dog’s teeth and freshen their breath. These yummy treats have an abrasive texture
that reduces tartar and plaque buildup, which is the main cause of dental
problems. Each Authority treat is rich
in omega 3 and six fatty acids from flaxseed that helps the skin and coat. I like knowing that they don’t add artificial
flavor or coloring.
Bentley
never turns down a treat, but his favorite is a dental stick. When he
hears the bag open, he runs to his special “treat mat” and waits. Authority allows for two regular sticks per day, which makes him twice as happy! He always enjoys a cool drink of water after he finishes his chews. Whenever you give dental treats to your pets, be sure to have fresh clean water available. If asked his favorite thing about Authority Dental Sticks, he’d wag his tail and say, “They taste like chicken!”

AuthorityDental treats come in a variety of sizes and styles, so they have one perfect for
your dog or cat. If you need help
deciding which chew is best for your pup, ask one of the friendly PetSmart
employees. They strive to provide Total
Lifetime Care℠ for every pet, every pet parent, every time. To do this, they offer superior products,
unmatched services, and superb customer service. Bentley loves his trips to PetSmart, because
in addition to the treats, clothes, and dog food, he gets a lot of attention
from the staff.

My dogs love dental treats, but we've never tried this brand. They would love having them twice a day instead of once!
ReplyDeleteShiner of course loves her dental treats, but we have not tried this brand before. The shape looks really cool!
ReplyDeleteWe have one every single morning to try and keep our nashers clean. Have a fabulous Friday.
ReplyDeleteBest wishes Molly
it does make us wonder how dogs over the last 50,000 survived without having their teeth brushed - maybe the tooth problems we see today is more about what we as humans feed dogs and our own sensitivities to doggie bad breath.
ReplyDeleteTo bad we couldn't shop together for our dental treats. Looks like you chose some good ones and I love how you sit to brush :)
