How to Increase the Chances of Getting Your Lost Pet Back Home #LostPetPreventionMonth

July is Lost Pet Prevention Month and I can’t think of a better time to share some tips for keeping your best friend safe. Did you know that 1 in 3 pets will be lost during their lifetime? As scary as that statistic is, it pales in comparison to the fact that only 2% of cats and 20% of dogs are reunited with their families. Those are heartbreaking numbers. What can you do to increase the odds that your pet will find its way back to you?
Here are a few tips to help
Purple and yellow collar from PrideBites with Bentley monogrammed
·        Make sure your pet is wearing a collar. Many people will not try to help a dog or cat without a collar because they assume it is a stray or feral.
PetHub dog tags with Way Out Westie and Friend Me tags
·        Identification tags on their collar are the best way for someone to locate you. The tag can be engraved with your information or you can get a new digital tag like the ones from PetHub. They have a QR code imprinted on the back so a person with a smartphone can scan the code and immediately contact you. They can also contact the PetHub Company with the tag’s information number.
Vet checking dog's microchip packaging
·        Microchipping is always a great idea for your dog or cat. It is painless and can be scanned by any shelter or veterinary clinic. The problem with chips is the pet parents that fail to update their information. If you move, be sure to change the information with your microchip provider.
White West Highland Terrier is a hole with sign pointing to Beijing
·        Check for escape routes in your yard and house. Screens can be pushed out the windows, doors can be left open, gates ajar, and some dogs can dig under the fence. You can read how Pierre escaped from me a few weeks ago here.
Basset Hound reading The Basset Hound Book
·        Keep complete records on your pet including veterinarian records and proof of ownership from shelter or organization where your pet is registered such as the AKC.

·        Keep a current photograph of your pet available to share online or in the neighborhood.
In a perfect world, no pets would run away, be stolen or get lost. Unfortunately, we don’t live in that world. Please take the necessary precautions to ensure you and your pet remain together safe and happy.

  3. Good tips. A dog from my apartment complex pushed the screen out of the window and was running around loose last summer. We captured him and brought him home. His dad fixed the window and puts a board there when he leaves for work.

  5. I think we have it covered - tag, check, chip, check, photos, like a bizillion, check, medical records, check, escape routes, sadly blocked, check. Great post! Hope I never get that call in the night from your mom that I need to come and track you boys down!

  6. We are strong believers in tags and micro-chips. Thankfully Sam has both. I may just have to get him a new spiffy collar like Bentley though. 😇

  8. Lots of good advice here! We escaped once when we were tiny puppy babies. Luckily a neighbor grabbed us up. Now mom and dad hope the yard is secure!

  9. These are all great tips and we always say you can't be too safe. I especially like collars that you can get embroidered with just the dogs' name and a phone number so people can quickly see it (along with all of the other things too!).
