It is Time to Walk Your Dog

January is National Walk Your Dog month and the perfect way to kick off a new year. Exercise is important to both humans and dogs so why not take a walk together? Your pooch will appreciate it and you will feel better too.
Here are a few things to keep in mind before beginning an exercise program with your dog.
Bentley Basset Hound enjoying his walk.
Know your dog’s level and don’t set out on a long journey. It is best to start small and add more distance as your dog becomes more comfortable.

Explore new places so that you both stay interested.

Be aware of your surroundings and carry a cell phone in case of an emergency.

Always check for fleas, ticks or burs that could attach themselves to your pup.

Never leave anything behind except your foot and paw prints. Scoop that poop!

  1. We's been gettin a lotta walks, but Brinley's momma decided it wuz too cold today. Apparently, 40 is her limit. I dunno why, I LUV da cold!

    1. My dog has had no other choice than adjusting to the cold :)

We live in Sweden and right now it's too cold to go out - besides we've had some really harsh storms blowing lately. Things are really harsh, but my doggy seems to love snow more than me sometimes!

  2. that are very good tips... and to change the location to discover new places is a super idea... I love it to see new things, even when I currewntly have my troll-phase and bark at efurrything & nuffing :o)

  4. Wise advice. Mom and I take a walk every day. January in NJ is a funny choice for Walk Your Dog Month. It's f-f-freezing most days. We take faster, shorter, more shivery walks in the cold.

    Love and licks,

  5. We are on the same page today my Bentley! Sadly, after our ice storm and now below zero temps, our walks are short. Mom has the spikes on her shoes so she doesn't fall down all the time, but it is tough going outside. We do still get in our walk, but until the ice melts, it won't be a lot of fun. Even I fell on my behind a time or two! Keep on walking to keep that sleek body of yours in shape!

  6. Mommy said we are the first doggies she ever had that did not like to walk. We stroll or stand
Looks like you guys are having a fun walk

  7. WE like all the advice fur Walking Da Humans... BUTT it is WAY too Cold and Snowy to be out Walkin HERE... HURRY SPRING....

  8. what a very pretty place for walkies, except for poisonous creatures.

  9. They say that if your doggie is overweight, then you are not getting enough exercise.

  10. Very nice post. Lots of great tips. Walking is the best exercise for any dog and their humans. Keep having fun walking together:)

  11. Wells, if it ever stops rainin', I am all in! yeah yeah, I knows, butts I don't likes to get my furs wet! Ma tried takin' me for walkies in the rain, and I stopped dead in my tracks and wouldn't move!!! BOL I thinks she got the hint....she says a 'waterdog' shouldn't mind gettin' wet! whatevers...

  12. We can't wait for spring and all this snow to go away so we can be out and about!

  13. The mom wishes we were better at walking...but you know us cats.

  14. Can we come down there and walk? We're getting icy conditions just like Emma, and it's no fun walking in that!

  15. Hopefully the temps here will get above single digits soon so we can resume our walking schedule.

  16. What great advice!! Now...if only the rain would stop!
    Dory, Jakey, Arty & Bilbo

  17. Actually I walk my peeps. They just think they are walking me!

  18. Exercise pets in poisonous areas. Yup, we are not surprised at those signs! We wish it would warm up so mom will take us for a walk. In the meantime we just run in and out of the house.

    Your Pals,

    Murphy & Stanley

I'd love to hear from you! Bark back!
