Bentley: “This Saturday is Halloween and I am so excited! Think of all the candy we can get. Chocolate bars, gum, caramels, and more chocolate.”
Pierre: “I can hardly wait. I have my costume and I am ready to go score some major treats. Except for the orange and black wrapped candies. Seriously, does anyone eat those?”
Me: “I hate to break it to y’all, but you boys can’t go trick or treating for candy. You know that chocolate can be a killer for dogs. As a matter of fact, there isn’t a safe human candy for dogs to eat. You will have to settle for some pumpkin dogs treats.”
Bentley: “Aww, no fair! At least we can light jack o’ lanterns. I’m
going to put a super-sized candle in mine so it can be seen from outer space!”
Pierre: “Cool, I will get my paws on the matches and we can light up the entire house with candles! Then, maybe we can have a quick game of chase before the trick or treaters visit.”
Me: “Boys, y’all can’t light candles! What if you catch your ears or tails on fire? You certainly can’t play chase around lit candles.”
Bentley: “Every party has a pooper, am I right? What about opening the door for trick or treaters? Surely, we can greet the goblins and ghosts.”
Pierre: “Yeah, I ain’t afraid of no ghosts! You can trust me not to dart out the door. Probably…maybe…probably not, but still…”
Me: “I am not a party pooper! I’m sorry, but you aren’t going to be answering the door. There are so many folks out there dressed up and it might be very frightening for the two of you. Halloween night can be very dangerous for pets. Both of you are staying inside and away from the door. No barking at the windows either.”
Bentley: “I could dress like a black cat and go out among the people. Nobody would know that I am actually a Basset Hound so I’d for sure be safe.”
Pierre: “That is a great idea. Cats are fast and everyone loves a black cat on Halloween.”
Me: “I know that this is going to be hard to believe, but black cats
are at the highest risk on Halloween. All black cats need to be kept inside. It is stupid, but some people think black cats are bad luck and try to cause harm to them. If possible, all dogs and cats need to stay indoors on Saturday. It is just the best way to make sure that y’all stay safe.
Bentley: “So let me get this straight. No candy, chocolate, gum or anything to munch on except dog treats. We can’t get around candles or any open flames. It is not a good idea for us to go to the open door or go outside where all of the trick or treaters are haunting. This goes double for black cats. Sheesh!”
Pierre: “What can we do for a good time this Halloween? Dogs and cats just want to have fun!”
Me: “I have the perfect plan for y’all and all of our dog and cat friends can join us. We are co-hosting our annual Halloween Spooktacular blog hop with Sugar the Golden Retriever! One lucky blogger will be chosen at random to receive a prize package from our sponsor Dr. Harvey’s! How does that sound?”
Bentley & Pierre: “That is a terrific idea for a very Happy Halloween! We will be ready for all the great photos and spooky stories. You can count on us for no tricks but plenty of treats.”

Can't wait for da Howloween blog hop!
ReplyDeleteThis is random, but I took my elderly dog, Antoinette to Halloween at PetSmart back years ago when she was younger. HUGE mistake. It was hot in the store, the workers were totally unorganized...ugh. We did get some cute pictures but she was so miserable. I think that is why I don't force costumes on the dogs anymore.
ReplyDeleteBUT, last year baby Maddie was Joker and I was Harley Quinn. She wore the costume about half the night. Lol. Sometimes she was Maddie, sometimes she was Joker.
The Halloween Hop will be so FUN! When they were younger, I used to take the girls every year to both Petsmart and PetCo for their Halloween parties!
ReplyDeleteit's much better to celebrate online with our friends, I so agree :o)

ReplyDeleteLily & Edward
We are going to be lying low on Halloween night since I am in nose work trials Sat. and Sun. The ringing of the doorbell for hours makes Mom and us crazy, so if we turn off the lights and sit in the back of the house, they should leave us alone. Being a Sat. night and getting an extra hour, we hope it isn't too wild.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun way to get that important information about Halloween safety out there! Things stay pretty quiet where we live, and Samantha always stays indoors anyway, so we don't have to worry about too much here.
ReplyDeleteWe probably won't have a big post for your hop, but we will have something!
Jan & the crew, Wag 'n Woof Pets
Wow, your mom just took all the fun out of Halloween. But, if it makes you feel any better, we aren't allowed any of that stuff either.
ReplyDeleteThat does sound like a fun way to celebrate...though I still wanna go trick or treating. ~Wally
