Christmas Travel is for the Dogs

Does your holiday trip over the river and through the woods to Grandmother’s house include your dog? Here are some interesting facts about traveling with your dog this season thanks to my friends at Kurgo®.
Dog Holiday Travel Infographic
Bentley and Pierre ride in their kennel in the back of our SUV whether we are going across town or across the country. They are able to lie down and sleep or sit up and look out of the window. It is safer for all of us. I know how fun it is to let your dog ride in your lap or in the seat next to you. However, if they aren’t restrained and you are involved in a wreck, your best friend will likely suffer major injuries. Buy a proper seat attachment or some type of restraint for them. Never let them stick their heads out of your window while the vehicle is in motion. Debris can get in their eyes or if you have to slam on your brakes, they can get hurt.
People like to think they are the exception to the rule, until they aren’t. There is a reason they are called “accidents.” Nobody ever expects to have a car wreck, yet thousands happen each day. Keep the joy in this holiday season by making sure your best friend is secure before heading out to the festivities.
If you are looking for great products to make your road trip safer and easier, visit Kurgo for everything from dog travel gear, car seat covers, collars, harnesses/leashes, and outdoor gear.

  1. Great post! Luckily this year we are not having any awkward family get togethers so I don't have to worry about travel. When we do go somewhere our dogs are belted into the backseat. We tried crating but they made them both extremely carsick and afraid to get in. Crates are great for some dogs, though! :)

  2. I bring my dog whenever possible on a trip. Luckily, he just curls up on the floor of the back seat and sleeps the whole time. I don't think he's very fond of car rides. ~RascalandRocco

  4. wow... I wonder what things people do while driving... I mean it's important to pet a dog... but maybe not really while driving on a highway :o) .... I'm glad my mom belongs to the rarest species of that chart... she is one of the 3%... but we will stop that, the photos are anyway not good, so we rather wait till we stop before we use the cam :ol)

  5. We love to ride along, but Mom is a safety freak, so we are always buckled in whether it is a five minute or five hour ride. We can't stand dogs running loose in cars, hanging out windows, etc. No good. We are also in the back of the SUV, so no distraction there.

  7. Cocoa has a harness and she tries to get out of it all.the.time!! It really is safer to have her in it for her and for us. If we had started it from the beginning it would be easier I'm sure since she doesn't seem to mind her crate and we did that from day one.

  10. There was a major accident locally when a man's Yorkie pup got on the floor under the brake pedal. It made us all rethink our travel arrangements with our dogs.

  14. Great post as car travel can be so dangerous. I have been in several bad accidents and know people who have lost dogs in accidents. I attach Kilo's harness to the seatbelt and I just got a new Kurgo car harness for him. The only problem is it is so strong, it is a bit heavy for walking. It looks like a human rock climbing harness- no wonder it does well in crash tests.

  16. We love Kurgo! I don't think traveling with your pets at Christmas is a good idea, it just depends on the circumstances I guess. Taffy and I each have our own Kurgo harnesses in the back seat, and we are on our third seat cover (mom not happy about that). Loved your Christmas card! Love Dolly

  29. My pet peeve is when people let their dog ride in their lap and have the window all the way down. I HAVE seen dogs literally fly out of the car. Luckily, the dog was okay, but It's awful!
