These ideas are good to keep in mind in the event of any water
disaster.
Standing
Water
•
High waters pose a danger to all animals. It is important to make sure your pet
is safe. Never leave a pet tied up or in a cage where they can’t get to higher
ground.
•
The dirty water can hide an abundance of dangers such as snakes or down here in
the south…alligators!
•
Standing water is a haven for mosquitoes. These pests carry diseases and parasites
like heartworms. It is not the time to skip your dog’s heartworm preventative.
•
Flooding is another reason that it is so important to scoop your dog’s poop.
All that feces that folks did not pick up is now in the floodwaters.
•
Do not allow your dog to drink flood water.
Land
Dangers
•
When flooding occurs, the landscape changes. This can cause your pet to become
disoriented. Keep your pet on a leash and make sure their microchip is updated.
•
Food and other unsavory things may be left high and dry. We all know that dogs
love a good stink so never let your pet eat anything off the ground.
•
The ground is oversaturated. Your pet can sink or get stuck in the muck. Always
know where your pet is if they are outside.
Stress
• Stress is very real for pets. If you have been
displaced, your pet is going to be very confused. Try to keep them close by and
reassure them.
• If you can foster dogs or cats that have lost
their homes, keep them separated from your pets. This will decrease the chance
of agitation or transferring an illness.
• Pets pick up on your emotions and will try to
comfort you. Enjoy a snuggle. It will do both of you a world of good.
• Try to remember that this will pass. Have faith
and stay strong. We are praying for you.

DeleteWonderful post, Melissa, thank you. We are all praying for those impacted by Hurricane Harvey and we are now praying for the safety of those in Hurricane Irma's path in Florida. I'm worried sick about my sisters, they were unable to get a flight out of Florida. I wanted them to come up here to NY but they can't get out.
