Introducing Dr. Harvey's Raw Vibrance

Let the bells ring out and the banners wave!! We are introducing Dr. Harvey’s newest base-mix that will take the guesswork out of homemade or raw feeding. Without further ado, all of you pet parents, puppies and dogs meet the incredible
Dr. Harvey's Raw Vibrance

More pet parents are realizing the health benefits of a homemade or raw diet for their dogs. The problem is in today’s ultra-busy world finding time to prepare a complete and balanced raw or homemade diet is difficult. How can you be sure your dog is getting the proper amount of nutrition? Not to mention the mess of grinding organ meat and bones! That is where Raw Vibrance comes in with a complete nutritional base for the perfect raw or homemade diet. Now it’s easy to prepare a healthy and balanced meal that your dog is going to LOVE.
Raw Vibrance ingredients
There are several benefits to feeding a raw diet including:
•more energy
• stronger immune system
• improved joint and bone health
• healthier teeth and gums
• Reduced body odor, stool odor & fresher breath
• Softer and shinier coat
• Healthy weight and muscle tone
Raw Vibrance base mix, ground beef, eggs and oil
I am a Dr. Harvey's brand ambassador and am being compensated for sharing their fine products. All opinions are my own and Dr. Harvey's is not responsible for the content of this article.
I prepare Bentley and Pierre’s food with different lightly cooked meats and various oils. It is wonderful knowing they receive high-quality food that I’ve hand selected. You never know exactly what you get in a bag of kibble, but starches, salt, and meat by-products are not something I’m comfortable feeding my boys.
Raw Vibrance dog food on a spoon
One look at the ingredients in Raw Vibrance lets me know I am feeding “The world’s most honest dog food.” That’s because you can actually see the wholesome and nutritious ingredients in every spoonful.
Woman preparing dog's meals as they watch
Preparing any of Dr. Harvey’s pre-mix meals is super easy and Raw Vibrance is no different. All it takes is three steps.
• Add hot water to the recommended amount of base mix and let it sit for 8-12 minutes. (This is the hardest part for the Bayou Boys)
• Add your choice of protein – Beef, Fish, poultry, eggs, etc.
• Add your choice of oil – Fish, Coconut, Hemp, Borage or Dr. Harvey’s Health & Shine gel caps
That’s it! Your dog will love the fresh taste and you will love knowing you are feeding a safe and healthy meal.

Why Choose Dr. Harvey’s?
Dr. Harvey’s has been a leader in the pet food industry for 30+ years when others rolled their eyes at the thought of all-natural food for our companion animals. He realized many of the big pet food makers were more concerned with the bottom line than the health and well-being of our beloved pets. That is why you’ll never find things like dyes, preservatives, chemicals, coloring or artificial ingredients in ANY of Dr. Harvey’s fabulous products.
We have been feeding Dr. Harvey’s foods for four years and the boys are the picture of health. They have tried all of the formulas and are currently enjoying Canine Health. It will be simple to add Raw Vibrance into their rotation and as you can tell, they LOVE it.
Did you know that Dr. Harvey’s has NEVER had a recall? That’s because they prepare the products in small batches to ensure the very best quality. Each new product undergoes vigorous testing before being introduced. Raw Vibrance was in the works for over a year before it met their incredibly high standards.
If you are thinking about a raw diet for your dog or have a question about one of Dr. Harvey’s products, just pick up the phone and give him a call. I’m serious. I have called several times and he’ll usually return my call right away. Isn’t that amazing? I can’t honestly think of another company where you can call and talk directly to the owner. He is a fountain of information and as friendly as can be. Tell him Melissa told you to call ~ (866) DOC H123 (866-362-4123)
Paisley the Weather Lab loves her Raw Vibrance free trial bag!
You can try Raw Vibrance by requesting a free trial size and all you pay is the $3.95 shipping & handling. The 5.5 oz. bag will make 4 one-pound servings. Paisley the Weather Lab was thrilled to get her trial size. She usually eats Dr. Harvey’s Veg-to-Bowl Fine Ground but was anxious to mix it up and rotate the Raw Vibrance into her feeding schedule. (She gave it a resounding two paws up)

How to Be a Responsible Dog Owner

According to the AKC, September is Responsible Dog Ownership Month. We don’t like to use the word “own” when it comes to our dogs, but I guess Dog Parenting is still a term that raises some folks’ hackles. Bentley and Pierre are part of our family. They are part of our tribe. All of our decisions take them into consideration.
We try our best to be responsible dog parents and as with most things in life, when you know better, you do better. One of the reasons we write Barking from the Bayou is to help you have a better relationship with your dog. Some of that is by showing you our mistakes so you don’t make them.

It is important to become a label reader when you are selecting a food for your dog or cat. With all of the recalls lately, it is a good idea to do some extra research before buying a particular brand.

In Search of Booty

Avast ye mateys! It be Talk Like a Pirate Day and the Bayou Buccaneers have a yarn to spin so let’s weigh anchor and hoist the Jolly Roger!
Cap’n Bentley Basset: “Blimey, First Mate Pierre! Did ye bring our treasure map? We shan’t be finding no golden doubloons or pieces of eight without a proper pirate’s map.”
First Mate Pierre Westie: Aaaarrrrgggghhhh! Ye cut me to the quick, scallywag. Do ye take me for some landlubber? This salty ol’ seadog never set sails until everything is shipshape and that includes having our top-secret treasure map.”
Cap’n Bentley: “Aye, bucko! Let’s batten down the hatches in case the bayou gets rough. I’ll man the crow’s nest and try to find where the map leads us. Keep an eye out for pillagers cuz these be dangerous waters ye are navigating.”
First Mate Pierre: “Yo ho ho! Ye tail is better than a weathervane at showing wind direction. Keep it up and we will be giving buried treasure the heave-ho by nightfall.”

A Wooftastic Breakfast Buffet For Your Dog

We were recently sent some H&P Dog Treats by our friends, Henry and Penny in exchange for our honest opinion. They not only have their own dog treat company, but these two adorable French Bulldogs have over 100,000 followers on Instagram, some viral videos, commercials and an online boutique. Talk about busy!
Bentley Basset Hound: “Hey, Mom! What’s that incredible smell? Have you been baking banana bread without me?”
Pierre Westie: “No way, dude! I smell peanut butter pancakes. There is no mistaking the delicious aroma of peanut butter with a hint of honey. Mmmmm!”

BFTB NETWoof News September 17, 2018

Bentley Basset Hound: “Hello and welcome once again to BFTB NETWoof News. Our thoughts are with those feeling the effects of Hurricane Florence. Paisley will have a storm update in our weather segment. What is our top story this week, Pierre?”

Pierre Westie: “We are starting off with a report on the wild horses that call North Carolina’s Outer Banks their home. Many feared the storm could take its toll on these beautiful animals. We are happy to report that the Cape Hatteras National Seashore posted on social media Saturday to say all the ponies on Ocracoke Island were safe. The Corella Wild Horse Fund has posted several photos of the wild Colonial Spanish Mustangs enjoying an overcast breeze along with some green grass in their water-soaked field.

This That and the Other

I had planned to introduce you to the incredible new base-mix recipe from Dr. Harvey’s called
Raw Vibrance today but with so many of our friends in the path of Hurricane Florence, we decided to postpone it until next week. We are praying that the storm is not as bad as forecasted. Many people that have decided to stay will likely be without power but if you are reading this, please stay safe. You can get tips on what to do

Farewell Friend

I have said it before and I’ll say it again, the most difficult part of being a pet blogger is having to say goodbye to our fur friends.
Our good friend and co-host of the Pet Parade, Basil had to leave us on Sunday, September 9, 2018. His devastated family was with him as he gained his wings.
They penned a beautiful farewell to
that I urge you to read.

BFTB NETWoof News September 10, 2018

Bentley Basset Hound: “Hello and welcome to BFTB NETWoof News for the week of September 10, 2018. We have fetched pawsome reports that will put a smile on your face. What’s our top story, Pierre?”
BFTB NETWoof News Top Story hosted by two dogs
Pierre Westie: “We are so excited to report that California is the first state to ban sales of beauty products tested on animals. The law will go into effect in January 2020. This includes products such as makeup, skincare, deodorants, and other healthcare products. We hope this becomes a nationwide ban. There is NO reason for companies to continue the barbaric practice of testing products on defenseless animals.”

BFTB NETWoof News September 3, 2018

Bentley Basset Hound: “Welcome to BFTB NETWoof News for September 3, 2018. It is Labor Day here in America which means a three-day weekend for many and the end of summer for most. We are back at the anchor desk after last week’s exciting special report from Paisley the Weather Lab a.k.a. Big Sister. The search for good news proved to be extremely difficult this week. There are a lot of really nasty things happening in the human world when it comes to animals. We have a couple of fun stories but must sadly start with some serious stuff. Pierre?”
BFTB NETWoof News Top Story: Ikea recall
Pierre Westie: “Our top story is a recall from Ikea effecting some 16,700 pet water dispensers. The $7.99 product can be a suffocation hazard to small dogs and cats. Their heads can become trapped in the inverted tank. Two dogs have already died prompting the massive recall. Ikea is urging all customers to stop using the dispenser and return it for a full refund.”

The Truth About Working Dogs

I was busy picking up Bentley and Pierre’s toys the other day when I happened to mention that they should be helping me. Once they quit laughing, they explained to me how much they do on a daily basis that is simply unappreciated. It seems the Bayou Boys feel they are not being properly compensated with the occasional treat.
Here is your chance to be a fly on the wall in my home.
Me: “Did y’all know that some dogs pick up their own toys? I shouldn’t have to go all over the house picking up your toys. Would it kill you to do a little work around here?”
Bentley: “I cannot believe my ears! You’re lucky you don’t have to pay us in cash for all of the jobs we do around here. It’s not easy being a working dog.”
Me: “Now it’s my turn to laugh! You boys don’t work. Mostly y’all sit around looking cute, mooching belly rubs, and going outside so you can bark and come back inside. That’s not exactly what I’d call work.”
Pierre: “You cut us to the quick! It would cost a fortune to hire humans to do the jobs we perform for you. Let’s take a quick look at what we do each day. You might want to grab a calculator.”
two dogs looking out window
Bentley: Guard Duty ~ Do you know how much people charge to be your personal guard defending you, Dad, and our home? We don’t want to scare you, but we’ve almost come under attack by sanitation workers, mail carriers, and small humans riding bikes more times than we can count. If we didn’t bark at them, we’d surely all be dead by now.”

Somewhere Over the Rainbow Bridge

We are joining Purr Prints of the Heart for Rainbow Remembrance Day. It is a wonderful way to honor the memory of those pets who have left their paw prints on our heart. This special day was founded in 2015 by Deborah Barnes of Zee & Zoey’s Cat Chronicles as a tribute to her Ragdoll cast, Mr. Jazz.
I originally shared this story several years ago but the feeling that I experienced is still as fresh as if it happened yesterday. The following is a true story of my visit from somewhere over the Rainbow Bridge.
Whenever I think of the dogs and cats that have shaped my life, my first thought is always of our first puppy, Madison the German Shepherd. She left us in the spring of 1997 and no amount of time will heal that pain. It wasn’t hard to decide to honor her on Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day. As often happens when I start writing, I lost myself in her story. It started out happy and as I went through the years, it eventually came to the time she had to leave us.

Fetch Your Dog Some Stix

Bentley Basset Hound: “Y’all are not going to believe this but Mom actually tried to get me to fetch this stick. Seriously, she should know the only sticks I am going after are these incredible soft moist pepperoni-style Blue Stix dog treats.”
Pierre Westie: “I can’t imagine why any dog would accept anything other than a stick of Stix. It not only doesn’t cause splinters like a real stick, but you won’t find any corn, wheat, soy or chicken by-products in these tasty treats. The thought of by-products makes me gag.”

BFTB NETWoof News August 20, 2018

Bentley Basset Hound: “Welcome to BFTB NETWoof News for the week of August 20, 2018. We hope you had a great weekend and are ready to start your day off with some animal news. Pierre, what’s our top story?”
Pierre Westie: “The top story is serious, but we are hoping to relieve some fears. We have received several inquiries about the scary infection that affected two people in Wisconsin over the summer. One woman died, and a man had his arms and legs amputated. Both of those infections were traced to Capnocytophaga bacteria which is commonly found in dog saliva. The truth is more than 70% of dogs and almost 60% of cats have this bacteria. It’s considered normal oral flora.

The Last Cigarette

There are not many dates that I remember. If birthdays aren’t written on the calendar, I forget. For years I called my brother the day after his birthday! I remember our anniversary but often have to count the years. (It’s 36) I don’t remember the anniversary of deaths or operations that I’ve had (10) and if you ask me what year something happened, I will probably be off by a decade. There is one day that I never forget to celebrate and that is today, August 17. Why you ask?
On this date four years ago, I smoked my very last cigarette. I took a photo of it to remind me that nothing that small will ever have power over me again. After smoking over 40 years, it was not easy but it is the best thing I’ve ever done for my health.

A Good Check Up

Bentley had his senior wellness checkup this week. It is the first time that he has officially seen our new vet. He did go get his nails clipped a few weeks ago but he needed a refill of his heartworm medicine and that required an office visit.  He and Pierre somehow got on different schedules, so their heartworm test is three months apart. Both boys take the same dosage, so we buy the six months supply of Heartgard and they share.

I know it seems like they should be on two different sizes but the 25 to 50 lbs. cover both boys. We are working with Pierre to drop five pounds that he has picked up. He blames it on the lack of squirrel chasing here in Texas. I blame myself for overfeeding him, but he gets sick when his tummy is empty. It is a double-edged sword with him, but we will get those extra pounds off.

Back-to-School Safety Tips for Pets

Pierre: “Bentley and I are visiting a classroom today to share some Back-to-School Safety tips. Do you think if I sit up front, I can be the teacher’s pet? School looks pretty interesting so far.  What kind of safety concerns can we find in a classroom?  I mean other than bullies, slamming our paws in lockers, falling out of my chair, and algebra?”
Bentley: “Why would algebra be a safety concern?”

BFTB NETWoof News set with two dogs
Pierre Westie: “Our top story celebrates the giant leaps that have been made in veterinary medicine. Did you know that canine heart disease affects about 8 million dogs in the United States? That is nearly 10% of the population but many pet parents are unaware of the problem.
When the diagnosis of a hole in the heart of a Great Pyrenees was made, she was able to undergo minimally invasive surgery at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at Colorado State University. The procedure mimics the human heart valve replacement surgery performed at top hospitals.

Are You Spoiling Your Dog?

West Highland White Terrier and Basset Hound
Bentley: “Hey, Mom! I’d like to draw your attention to the calendar. Do you notice anything about August 10 that catches your eye? It looks pretty gosh darn important from down here.”
Me: “Are you talking about all the little dog prints and hearts? Did you put those on there? What’s the big idea?”
Pierre: “Never try to kid a kidder, Mom! You know this is Spoil Your Dog Day. What have you got planned for us? Are we going to the park? What about gifts? Most importantly, will there be cake?”
Me: “Are you serious? We spoil y’all every single day of the year. I think a nice long belly rub should be enough, don’t you?”

Happy International Cat Day

Believe it or not, we used to be a cat household. That’s right, back in the early 80’s we had three cats. Since today is International Cat Day, I thought it’d be nice to look back at these incredible friends.
If you are a regular reader of this blog, then you are probably familiar with Miss Gitty. I adopted her at the Humane Society the summer of my high school graduation. She was my first official responsibility as I ventured out on my own. Luckily, Miss Gitty was not high maintenance and loved to just hang out with me. She was an excellent judge of character and if she didn’t like someone, there was a good reason. I learned to trust her judgment early on. We had a good thing just the two of us but then I met Amos.

Bentley Basset Hound: “Hello and welcome to this week’s BFTB NETWoof News. We hope that you had a wonderful weekend and we want to keep your Monday on a positive note so here is Pierre with our top story.”
BFTB NETWoof News with two dogs anchoring
Pierre Westie: “We are going to start with a theme song that might get stuck in your head. “Just sit right back and you’ll hear a tale, a tale of a tiny ship.♪” Gilligan’s Island is a tv land classic and the inspiration for the names of a litter of puppies. Why were the seven Lab-mix pups named Gilligan, Skipper, Thurston, Mrs. Howell, Ginger, The Professor, and MaryAnn? The litter of puppies was found on a deserted island in the middle of a lake in Canada. Nobody is sure how they ended up on the island but unlike the other castaways, these four-month-old siblings have been rescued. They will eventually be available for adoption.”

Me: “I’m going to be totally honest with you right from the start of this post. I struggled with whether I should share this story. I feel so horrible about what happened but as a blogger, I feel it’s my responsibility to tell you my mistake in hopes of preventing you from doing the same thing.”
Bentley Basset Hound: “Are you going to tell them about how you tried to kill me in my sleep the other night?”
Me: “Yes, I mean…no, I did not try to kill you but yes, I am going to tell them what happened.
